I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Don't get too excited. Mine was running for a while and then stopped again. Now nothings helps anymore, no way to turn on the type cover. For external working I take my external bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or for sone things the pen is enough. I tell all my clients they should be warned to buy a surface for professional purposes.
You know what, out of boredom, I decided to get on my Surface at 2am after leaving it without power for a couple of days. I remembered what you said and did it and I saw my Fn light up. I got my Surface working normally with my Keyboard again after weeks. Theres still problems like screen rotation being stuck when being turned but other then that its fine. Thank you.
Dear "colleagues" about Surface 4 pro type cover issue. Being some weeks ago in NYC for holiday and visiting - I suppose - one of the main MS Store in USA, I had the chance to speak directly with the MS selling support. They gave me immediate the option to replace my - out of warranty - surface with a refurbished one free charge. Unfortunately I left it at home it and I'm still waiting for a solution from MS. So I suggest to do this tentative in your country where a MS Store exists (in Italy no). In the meantime I canceled my plan to buy a new one (version 6) till MS will solve free charge the SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE issue.
Try same again after doing the 2 button restart as thats what got mine to show for all 2 seconds till logon
Thanks for the suggestion, sadly it did nothing:( Tried it on different other surface units, and it did work there though. Will just wait until Microsoft return. Have a nice weekend;)
