Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

The problem is not with the type cover, but with the Surface itself, we have a few surface pro 4, only 1 is having problems, but the type cover is working with the other Surface.

The keyboard / mouse is not working in UEFI, it it detected in windows. but not working.

The only place where I can see and move the cursor is when I do a restore with the usb key, after the restore it ask to reset the TPM (a message box where I can click continue).

Then it boot in windows and it's not working anymore....

The problem isn't with the type cover. If you get the opportunity, take your existing type cover and try it with a different surface pro. I bet it'll work. The problem is with the connector port. Microsoft bricked the type cover connector port.

"Your only official solution is to spend $450US for an out of warranty refurb exchange. "

    Hi Barbara,

The price of a new Surface Pro Signature Type Cover is €184.99 Incl. VAT. Why would anyone pay $450US for a refurb exchange? It seems that any type of cover is compatible with surface pro 4 and you get a 1-year limited hardware warranty, see confirmation from Microsoft store below:

Thank you for patiently waiting. I was able to check my resources here and it seems that all our Type cover is compatible with Surface Pro 4.

There are unfortunately many people with this issue (including a neighbor and a

friend). For most, the problem occurs after some random Windows Update. My

theory is that it isn't a particular update, but something in the update PROCESS

that corrupts the firmware somehow. Microsoft has not commented on this, nor

have they come up with a fix.

If it does not work in the UEFI, no amount of reimaging will fix it. Cleaning

the contacts has not fixed this for anyone.

The UEFI settings can be adjusted only during system startup. To load the UEFI

    firmware settings menu:

    1. Shut down your Surface and wait 10 seconds.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button on your Surface and at the same

time, press and release the power button.

    1. The Microsoft or Surface logo appears on your screen. Continue to

hold the volume-up button. Release the button once the UEFI screen appears.

Your only official solution is to spend $450US for an out of warranty refurb

    exchange.

You can also investigate 3rd party type covers that use Bluetooth like

    https://www.amazon.com/Pinhen-Surface-Bluetooth-Detachable-Removable/dp/B01M3RLDFS

(one of these is for SP4, the others are for Surface 3). I have no firsthand

experience with these but Amazon has a good return policy.

I am having the same problem with my Surface Pro 4. The keyboard first didn't work intermittently, and now it doesn't work ever. I did all the suggested things to fix it--wiping with alcohol, restarting, "hard reboot," Microsoft Diagnostic Tool, and resetting the Surface (argh). Nothing worked.

What I am wondering is, would buying a new keyboard fix this? I would prefer to do that than to buy an entirely new computer or spend some ridiculous amount of money trying to get my barely-out-of-warranty Surface fixed. But obviously I dont want to buy a new keyboard if it will have the same problem due to some problem with the Surface itself recognizing the keyboard.
