Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

The most disappointing thing is that MS acts like nothing happened. From my point of view I see that it could be solved by qualified firmware engineer quite quickly but this will never happen. At least if they don't provide warranty they can allow firmware downgrade for user's risk. There is not much to loose...

Surfaces are full of bugs (as I can see on this forum) and with this experience I cannot trust Surface ever again.

I received the wrong update during vacation where I haven't dock available. So I think it is not dock related...

It's disheartening to discover that this thread has been going for 2 and a half years. More-so when you discover there were Surface Pro 3 people with the same issue in another thread started a couple years earlier. I'm simply adding my voice to the chorus of victims... and to confirm that it's still happening. Last Wednesday (10 Feb 2021), my Surface Pro 4 received a random set of not-insignificant windows updates... and since then my Type Cover is unresponsive... no power, nothing.

I know it's not the Type Cover 'cos mine works on a friends Surface... theirs doesn't work on mine. It doesn't work from BIOS either, no power at all... it's like the port is turned off... obvious conclusion, firmware was updated or screwed up during update.

I've tried all the Microsoft Troubleshooting steps, useless. I've tried steps listed on the web and in this thread, nothing works. I even tried running down the battery for a temporary fix, that didn't work for me. I've reset it to no avail. I even tried the downloaded Recovery USB which sent me back to 1709. It was all pointless. They've broken it and essentially rendered my tablet into a desktop, since without the Type Cover it is useless as a portable device. I refuse to carry a keyboard or throw money at a bluetooth Type Cover replacement.

Until this point, I was sold on Surface Pro's into the future, not anymore. This experience has taught me that the OS vendor needs to be seperate from the hardware vendor. I suspect other vendors would have taken this issue seriously by now.

The reported inability to revert or reapply firmware leads me to conclude we'll never see a resolution. Since it's not more wide-spread, is it a particular set of circumstances rather than the firmware update alone? I don't know anything but eg. I use a Microsoft Surface Dock... it was plugged into it last week when the updates occurred. Anecdotally, I heard at work that historically there have been issues with the plugged-in dock messing up firmware updates. As I say, I don't know what I'm talking about. Is there a possible power/standby correlation with the update?

In any case, I live in hope that it gets fixed but have significantly lowered my expectations since reading this thread.

now that I've extracted all these files, what do I do with them?  Specifically the SurfacePro4FwUpdate folder/files and the SurfacePro4TypeCoverIntegration folder/files?

    Hello OutsideOctaves,

it seems to me that you are trying to install the msi or somehow to catch the files from it... You must extract it by typing "msiexec /a <msifilename> /qb TARGETDIR=C:\surfacefirmware" to command line. After that you will get the drivers and firmware from the msi.

I'm not sure which surface are you using but I can confirm that for my SP4 there is NO WAY how to downgrade UEFI. From Windows it is not possible at all. From Linux after spending whole weekend I was able to run the flashing process but it rejects older version by itself. So Microsoft put a lot of work to unable the downgrade.

In other words there is no way how to downgrade the firmware at all and MS wrote that they will not support SP4 anymore. So back to start and 8 months and 1700$ thrown out. Thank you Microsoft to teaching me that your computer is piece of **** and this is clear example you have no idea how to make and support computers. Next week I will receive HP Elite x2 g4 and I will never EVER come back to Surface or any other MS Hardware again!!!
