Just chiming in here to say my SP4 has developed this issue of not detecting the type cover. I have done a full reinstall from the source image MS has on the website. No dice... The keyboard doesn't even work in the EFI. I'll have to go see my local MS store over the weekend and see what they say... Not impressed.
Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.
I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

2018-10-06T20:06:06+00:00 So today i finally gabe up and decided to do a full system reinstall. I dowloaded the rcivery image from the microsoft site ans created a recovery usb from which i rebooted and viola ! Everything started working again all the way from re-install through including after th re-image.
lets see how long it lasts when microsoft updates are applied.
i will be keeping that usb safe incase of issues but what a pain and effort. It just probes its not hardware at all but sottware/firmware issue.
i hope this helps someone else

2018-10-06T19:41:39+00:00 Today I went to Microsoft Store to fix my surface pro 4 with the same issue. I bought it 3 years ago. After they tried reinstalling the operating systrm, they replaced my computer with a new one for free. I know some of you guys were asked to pay $450 for the exchange. Maybe it’s good idea to try another store

2018-10-06T15:10:23+00:00 Just want to report that my Type Cover on my SP 4 is also not working since yesterday after being in my closet for two weeks. It ran out of battery during that time but that shouldnt really be a problem.
Hopefully some update will restore it as it did for the poster above....

2018-10-06T13:34:45+00:00 Good day!
My keyboard started working after the october 2018 update. Update history shows an update to my type cover driver. My keyboard still has some bugs like:
- it stops working after a while when im not using it.
- sometimes if i hold a key it will not stop even if i release the key
- mouse sometimes lags and does not respond
But it now works! after months of hating and wanting to throw my surface pro 4, now i do not want to throw it but i still hate it. Why did it took so long. If you look at the official update history they keyboard update is not included. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ph/help/4023489/surface-surface-pro-4-update-history
May be the big update (oct 2018 update) triggered a check that saw a driver problem? not sure but on my sp4 it now works. Just want the community know.
