Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

    Well Martin,

I have explained almost the exact same thing to so many MS support staff. What I can't understand and it really infuriates me is how hard can it actually be to just restore the system software back to the original working state. They most certainly have a restore point or date to roll back. Don't care for about any of the non sense updates.

The Surface support team is still not understanding the issue, the cause is not about the type cover. I borrowed a few working type covers to put on my SP4, it wont work. Put them back to their original machines, no problem at all.

In Device Manager, the type cover device disappeared and no way to re-install it again.

I guess all the resources in MS now shift to Surface Go and no one is actually investigating what has happened to the older version surface. Only the forum operators copy the same *fixes* million times in light to get away with it.

    Hi all,

The message below was received from the Surface Support Team just yesterday.  From the message, I can now confidently say that they will never  try to fix the issues with our SP's type covers. Sorry for the bad news but like so many others said before , personally, I doubt that a reset will fix the issue with my type cover keyboard.

"I really understand that this is also important to you and as of the moment we 2 options for this surface type cover. Reset or Replacement.

Resettingthe surface device has 2 options.Reset - keep my files and Reset - remove everything.(Go to Settings>> Update and Security>> Recovery>> Reset this PC> Get started.

In this process, just to set an expectation that if this Reset process won't fix the type cover that's the time that we will going to process a Replacement. Since this surface type cover is Out-of-Warranty there's a charge for the type cover itself."

Have a nice day from the Surface Team.

Add me to the list of users that have a useless Surface Pro 4 with no working type cover.  Mine fell out of warranty a few months ago, just before the problem started.  I've tried firmware updates, removing/re-installing drivers, Windows updates, and now a system recovery (which took two days).  Of course the type cover STILL doesn't work after a fresh Windows install, and I have to reconfigure it without a working keyboard.  What a pain!

The same issue happened to my SP4 after Windows Updates, I have been searching over million Surface Pro forum to find the solution but only see hundred of thousand of Surface Pro user got this issue out of the blue.

It has been at least 6 months and Microsoft still even not stand out, announce the issue and positively provide the solution. The price of Surface Pro was not cheap but we only got this kind of service, I am very disappointed.

Now the Surface Go has launched and I will definitely warn any potential Surface Go buyer to aware of type cover problem, which is likely to happen to them again sometime later.
