Surface Pro 2 - Surface cover telemetry driver / blank screen after putting tablet to sleep

Hi,

I just picked up my Surface Pro 2 256GB today and it ran into problems right after applying the firmware update that seemed to have been released just today on Windows Update.  I confirmed this problem was caused by the firmware update because I restored the tablet and the wireless was working fine and I applied the firmware update and that broke the wireless.

After the update, the Marvell AVASTAR Wireless Composite Device stopped working...meaning, the tablet does not recognize the wireless card.  This is confirmed by going into the Device Manager and seeing 2 unknown devices (one of them was the wireless card, the other unrecognized device I will explain in the next paragraph) When I tried running the update driver function, it tried to reinstall the driver but returned the following error.

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device

Reinstall the drivers for this device (Code 18)

I had to go the manual route and there were 2 Marvell drivers listed and one Microsoft driver listed for the Marvell card.  The 2 marvell drivers listed had exactly the same name.  However, only choosing and applying the second one worked.  So, the wireless was working again.

The other "unknown device" turned out to be something called "Surface Cover Telemetry".  However, trying the same troubleshooting process for the wireless card did not solve the problem and the devices still remains "unknown" in the device manager.  I just left it and carried on with installing my other software and apps as the tablet and the Type Cover 2 seemed to be functioning properly.

However, when I put the tablet to sleep by closing the Type Cover (while on battery power but charged up to 100%), the screen remained blank even though I opened up the cover again and tried to wake the tablet.  I knew that the tablet was still on but the screen remained blank even after I tried touching it, typing on the keyboard as well as briefly tapping the on/off button.  When I touch the Windows icon on the bottom frame of the tablet, I can feel a slight vibration and that told me that the tablet was on but the screen somehow is totally off.

I decided to do a soft reset of the tablet by holding on the on/off button for more then 10 seconds.  However, the screen only worked properly after many attempts.

My questions are, could it be that this "unknown device" that needs the "Surface Cover Telemetry" driver is causing this blank screen problem?  And if so, where can I download a driver that works?

Thanks.

I just installed the December firmware update and the Surface Cover Telemetry driver is now properly installed without me having to do anything other than apply the firmware update.

Update: after the install, I was getting the onscreen keyboard popping up even though I had the Touch Cover attached. A reboot cleared that up.

Update 2: definitely recommend reboot. Before reboot the Telemetry driver was under Sensors and closing the Cover put the Surface into Hibernate. After reboot the driver is in System devices and puts the Surface in Sleep mode, far better. Clearly this isn't fully installed / activated until another reboot after install.

    Hi,

I had exactly the same problem. Ended up doing 3 restores and still couldn't resolved. However, it is now fixed!!!

    Here's what to do:

    1). Restore your PC

2). Manually update the Telemetry driver by:

    • Downloading the drivers manually from the Microsoft Download Centre (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2884846/en-gb) and unzip it
    • Go to your device manager and Select the device that's not working (Typcover Telemetry in this case) and click update driver.
    • Then search on your PC for the package you downloaded to find the correct driver (in the Microsoft folder). It should successfully update and the yellow ! icon will disappear
    1. RESTART - this is important at every step, I've found.
    2. Create Recovery Point - this is also important at every step so you can go back in time if it fails. Better to have more than one in case one fails.
    • Goto your start screen and start typing 'Recovery', then select 'Create Restore Point'
    1. Start Installing your programmes. AFTER EACH ONE or SET of programmes, RESTART and CREATE RECOVERING POINT
    2. Run Windows Update (Desktop Mode) and right click on the Firmware update to 'Hide' the update.
    3. Then run the windows updates, RESTARTING AND CREATING RECOVERY POINTS with each install (DO NOT INSTALL THE FIRMWARE YET)
    4. Once all your programmes and updates (excluding the firmware update) are installed:
    • Goto Device Manager
    • Select the Network Adaptors dropdown and pick the Marvel Wireless controller
    • Choose Update Driver and manually install the driver from the package you downloaded at Step 2
    1. RESTART / CREATE RESTORE POINT
    2. Check for any other updates and RESTART / CREATE RESTORE POINT (just to be safe).
    3. Go back to Windows Update (Desktop version) and click 'Restore Hidden Updates'
    • Select the Firmware Update and choose Restore
    • Windows update will run again and tell you that you have a firmware update available.
    • Select the update and click - INSTALL AND RESTART
    1. When the system restarts, everything should be updated with Wireless working and no ! or ? icons in your Device Manager.

    If the firmware still fails

IF the firmware does fail, you've created lots of Restore Points along the way to go back in time and find a spot where the WiFi was working (it will recover). Best to run the Restore Points from the Modern UI:

    • Goto Start Screen, and type 'RECOVERY'
    • Select ADVANCE SET-UP.
    • When the PC restarts in recovery mode, goto Advanced and select Restore Recovery Point

I've found this to be more reliable than doing it from the Desktop.

    Turn Automatic Updates Off

Another thing I did was turn the Automatic Windows Updates off, requiring windows to download and ASK if I want to install any updates. May not be part of the solution, but at least you won't download an update without creating a restore point first!

Hope this helps. Please let me know how you get on with it. I've not found any easier solutions anywhere online and the issue only appears to be with those of us who downloaded the firmware AFTER doing a restore / refresh of our PCs first.

I had to do a refresh after an update, when the Typecover Telemetry driver wouldn't load. After downloading the Windows Updates again, including the latest firmware update, I lost any ability to connect to a network over a WiFi connection. I'm not talking about the PC finding a wireless network and dropping out... I mean, the WiFi device wasn't working at all and couldn't even pick up any WiFi routers (coffee shops, home and friends houses - so not a router issue).

Refreshing again or using system restore to an earlier point solved the issue, which then came back after the firmware update was installed again. I've done this three times, installing all other updates first before trying the firmware and only when the firmware update was installed did the problem come back. Yes, I've restarted the PC straight after the update and even let Windows run the update automatically without manually 'checking for updates' - no change.

As such, I am unable to install the firmware update and would like to know what fixes are available, especially given after the problem occurs, it's not possible to connect to the internet anymore.

I have downloaded the October updates and tried to manually reinstall the driver, which is hit and miss (have got it to load, but still have the issue, or the driver doesn't update at all).

Please help. I like to think I have the latest updates, including firmware, but I'm not prepared to go through a restore all over again. I've wasted far to many hours (days) on this already.

You can't ask the Device Manager to automatically find the driver.  Instead, unpack the Oct. Driver Update ZIP file, then navigate in Explorer to the Telemetry Driver folder, find the INF, right click and select Install.

That doesn't work for me, the device is still unknown. I think the only way to install the Telemetry Driver is to do a full reset and install it before running any windows updates like PaulCicchetti stated. Alternatly patch the recovery image with the drivers and do a full reset.

I don't want to spend the time doing a full reset just to get the touch cover to work.

I'm still waiting for MS to come with an patch for this or at least respond to this thread!!??
