My surface pro 4 is currently losing around 20% charge overnight. This is a widely reported problem and I have tried all of the various suggested fixes - no improvement.

MICROSOFT - WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS???

Surface | Surface Pro | Power and battery

So MINIX and HAP drain the battery even when the device is powered off?

I own also an Alienware notebook, my son a Surface Pro 5 and both don't suffer from battery drain; my Pro 4 has always suffered from light battery drain (8/10% a day) but it's got  worse after last August firmware/drivers update. Thank you anyway for your answer

Thanks for this insight. I had done some research myself along those lines and the Intel Management Engine. What is not explained is that this was not an issue untill the middle of last year following updates to the system software, which suggests something was turned on. Why then is it not possible to turn it off again. Also I own 2 other non Microsoft laptops 1 newer 1 older that do not exhibit this problem. However I thank you again for your contribution.

    Hello,

They haven't responded with a fix because they can't fix it. This issue is affecting notebooks from all vendors, not just Microsoft.

The issue is caused by MINIX. It's a Mini Linux running on the processor Intel Management component all the time. You can't switch it off. As long as there is power, it will run - on desktops and notebooks. Changing drivers or even the OS will make no difference.

Since 2008, Intel is running code as part of High Assurance Platform specification (HAP). AMD started doing the same thing in 2013. This is a management specification written by the NSA. What it does is not clear, as neither Intel or AMD will divulge the code.

Sorry to say, we are all stuck with notebooks draining batteries.

    JD

No one is there, they do not care. I will never buy Microsoft hardware again.
