Surface Pro 6 Runs Slower in Dock

My Surface Pro 6 runs noticeably slower when it is connected to the dock. I have a dock at both home and work and see the same reduced performance in both places. This is not a new issue (unlikely related to a recent Win or other software update). Both docks were originally purchased for use with my previous Surface Pro 4 device.

Does anyone else notice such a pattern?

Any thoughts on what might be causing this and how to fix it?

  • Surface Pro 6, i7, 16gb
  • Win 10 10.0.17763 Build 17763
  • >300GB of 500GB hard drive are free

I don't see any obvious issues when looking at Task Manager. CPU, memory and internet are all lightly utilized.

    Using ThrottleStop, unchecking the BD PROCHOT box works a charm.

    I can toggle that checkbox and watch as TaskMan shows the SP6 processor toggle between 0.4GHz and full speed.

    So, it appears that MS has a problem with the Surface devices in that they will throttle the CPU while charging, and this appears related to BD PROCHOT.

    I wonder how many people own these devices, notice that they get slow, and don't know where to find a fix. Too bad.

    MS should really fix this in an automated update.

    I am hoping this is fixed now. I called Microsoft and they did three things (only one that was new):

    1. Ran the Surface Toolkit. I'm not sure that this task did anything but it's probably a good idea.
    2. Follow these instructions to install and then run the Surface Dock Updater. The first time I ran this installer, it failed. The program told me to power cycle the unit and do it again. It worked the second time. I am guessing that the update to the dock's firmware was the item that had the most impact. I was unaware of this tool.
    3. Installed the latest firmware and drivers for my Windows Build 17763 using this link. Presumably I should not have needed to do this since Windows Update should be keeping these current. The MS tech, however, stated that it was important.

    Hope this helps others.

    I ran the diagnostic but I can't tell whether it actually did anything. Regardless whether it made changes, I can still see a difference between undocked (faster) and docked (sluggish).

    All software is up-to-date. The problem has existed at some level for as long as I have owned the computer.

    No, there are no other Surface Devices connected to the dock....only this Surface Pro 6.

    For us to better understand your concern, please answer the questions:

    • Is there any changes on the Surface device before this issue happened?
    • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps? If yes, what are those steps?
    • May we know if you have any other Surface device connect to the Surface dock if the same issue happened?

    Here are the few things we can highly suggests you do:

    **Step 1:**We will make sure your Surface device is up-to-date. To check the updates, go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update, on the right side please tap/click the button "Check for updates" for us to know if there's any pending updates that needs to be installed on your Surface device. (Note: If there's any pending update on your Surface device, please do the update and while the Surface device is downloading/installing the updates, please do not perform any steps on your Surface device, let the Surface device completely installed the updates).

    **Step 2:**Please download and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit on your Surface device using this link http://aka.ms/surfacedt It is a self-healing tool which looks for potential issues and fixes them, as well as ensures your device is completely up to date. The tool takes about 15-30 minutes to run.
