Surface Laptop 3 (Intel) issue with DP1.2 monitor after installing January 2020 updates

Just a heads up and if someone from Microsoft sees this maybe talk to the Surface team:

After installing the January 2020 driver and firmware updates for Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (Intel), my machine detected my external monitor (Dell U2715H) as 640x480.

The connection is made from SL3 -> Lenovo USB-C Dock Gen 2 -> Displayport to Mini Displayport on the Dell U2715h.

The problem went away after I disabled DP1.2 on the Dell Monitor and the screen was detected with its native resolution of 2560x1440 again.

    Any progress on this? 

    I've just purchased a Samsung 49 inch 5k gaming monitor. I use a SL3 with a Surface Dock. The monitor is connected to the dock using a Mini-DisplayPort from the dock to the DisplayPort on the monitor. 

    At first the resolution on the monitor was 640x480. After a bit of research, I found that I'm not the only person with this issue (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/monitor-stuck-on-displayport-with-640x480/fb4177e2-8c46-48b3-ae0e-168e9b86347b). 

    I called Samsung support who asked me to try the monitor with another system. I have an old Surface Pro 2 to which I connected the external monitor using the same cable: it worked! Albeit with a lower resolution than expected: 3840 by 1080. So Samsung is off the hook as it proved that the monitor is not at fault here. 

    Back on the SL3, I turn my attention to the Display Adapter in Device Manager and it tells me that everything is working fine (pfff ya right!). The adaptor is an Intel Iris Plus Graphics and the driver version was 26.20.100.7641.

    From the same forum linked above, someone mentioned to try version 25.20.100.7101. It worked! But unfortunately again it was 3840 by 1080. Good but not the resolution I was expecting given I spent the extra money to have 5120 by 1440 at 120hz. 

    I head on over to Intel and try the latest version which Intel supports for Windows 10 1909 and 2004: 27.20.100.8280. External monitor went black with flickering. 

    I reverted to 25.20.100.7101. 

    I've ordered a USB-C to Display Port 1.4 HBR3 cable and I am eager to see the result in a week or so. Apparently the cable supports 4k/5k/8k and I think I saw a thread where it was mentioned that SL3  to external monitor via USB-C works at 5120 x 1440. 

    I just think it is a shame that this issue has apparently been going on for months now and neither Microsoft, Intel or Samsung have gotten this one fixed yet.  I also think that it is sad that I have to spend extra dollars to get a cable that might potentially make this whole thing work when I've already spent an enormous amount of money to get the top of the line (Hey Samsung, perhaps you should think about including a USB-C to DP1.4 HBR3 cable in the box instead of and HDMI to HDMI or a DP to DP cable in the box... just saying!).

    PS: I tried all the above mentioned versions on both Windows 10 1909 and 2004 (Enterprise Editions for both). Only one has worked so far but at a lower expected resolution of 3840x1080 instead of 5120x1440. 

    Unless Microsoft releases an update in the coming week that would fix this issue, I'll keep using the lower resolution until I get the HBR3 cable and I'll post the results here.

    EDIT: 30 minutes later.

    Just rebooted my computer, started using my second monitor, and 10 seconds later...it crapped out again. So none of the intel or Microsoft provided Drivers seem to be making a difference here.

    Multiple resets, unplug/plug in, extend, duplicate, etc.

    As soon as I upgraded to the latest intel drivers though, it stopped working again and reverted to the old problems.

    Beaum's link appears to have resolved the issues I was experiencing. I followed the Intel installation recommendations by removing the Iris display device and drivers until all the Microsoft drivers were gone and the device was discovered as generic.

    I've been testing for about a week with the Windows 10 fast start up disabled and addition power cycles during the day without experiencing any issues. I have been able to set the default monitor back to the display port and have not had to rely on an ancient USB to VGA interface. Hopefully future Microsoft OEM customizations will not re-introduce the issue via Windows Update.

    Thank you Beaum for sharing the news about the unlocked driver option and the link to the Intel drivers.
