2026-05-28T07:57:41.1433333+00:00 A common cause of intermittent trackpad freezes on a new Windows 11 laptop is a problematic or outdated touchpad driver. Updating or reinstalling the touchpad driver is the supported first step.
Follow these steps in order:
- Make sure Windows is fully updated
- Use Windows Update to install all available updates, including drivers. This is the recommended way to get the latest touchpad driver.
- For details, see the guidance in Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers referenced from the touchpad article.
- Update the touchpad driver via Device Manager
- Open Device Manager (type device manager in the search box on the taskbar and select Device Manager).
- Look for the touchpad under:
- Human Interface Devices, or
- Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the touchpad entry and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts to search automatically for updated driver software.
- Reinstall the touchpad driver via Device Manager If updating does not help or no newer driver is found:
- In Device Manager, locate the touchpad again under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the touchpad and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart the laptop.
- Windows will reinstall the touchpad driver automatically from Windows Update.
- If the issue persists If updating and reinstalling the touchpad driver do not resolve the freezing, contact MSI support. The official guidance is to contact the device manufacturer when driver updates and reinstalls do not fix touchpad issues.
