This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

Seconded. I do NOT WANT CoPilot. I do not want to go into the registry or roll back just to have the basic function restored. This is ridiculous.
DEFINITELY: We need it OFF in 365 -- then have it as an option for those who want, need, and/or like it. Thank you!
how to turn off copilot permanently
If you have up to date MS Word, there is now a shut-off button - but only for Word, and not for PowerPoint or Excel.
You also can sign in to Microsoft and hit the cancel subscription. Hopefully the function is still there, where Microsoft will open up the option to change your subscription to CLASSIC. When you do this, you'll be switched to the CLASSIC version of MS-365 which supposedly does not have Copilot in it. The problem with that offering is that Microsoft won't let us immediately switch to CLASSIC to get rid of Copilot. It will only switch over to CLASSIC once your subscription renews.
I have read many of these comments. Is it really true that there is no way to shut co-pilot off? Seriously? It's horrendous. I will have to switch word-processing software. I have written more than a million published words on MW. Unbelievable.
