This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

Check out SoftMaker NX - it reads and writes Word Documents really well. It has ChatGPT, but you have to OPT IN. It's not on default. I never use it.
I've just cleared out all my Microsoft stuff off my system and I'm moving all my OneDrive stuff right now. I won't be using anything Microsoft going forward.
I'm literally sick of you, Microsoft. HAD ENOUGH.
I've had enough of programs that change every time I start them up, with features that I can't disable, that force me to constantly waste time to maintain a stable working environment, updating to see if their lordships have decided to reverse for political reasons the last change they wanted to sneak me while they sneak me others. And furthermore, without a clear and simple privacy policy to assure me that there is NO telemetry whatsoever. If you want to investigate the performance of your software on my systems, ask me for a quote.
I have already found an office suite that does what I need, no nonsense; I will have to look for a cloud service, a client to download my mail, and as soon as I can, an operating system. It will be a pain, but I assure you that you are going to lose me as a customer; if possible, at the next renewal. It's better the burden of seeking alternatives than to continue with this bloody via crucis.
There is no "enable copilot" button
I want to delete it - I don't want ANY AI on my machine, nor on any programme I choose to use. It's a risk I'm not willing to accept. The presence of AI can negate all my work that I've spent YEARS creating. My only option is to cancel my subscription and leave Microsoft and find an alternative programme that doesn't use AI (or doesn't enforce AI and is an 'opt in' system).
