How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    I have windows 11 pro and latest Microsoft 365 home edition. I do not have access to turning off copilot under file>options>copilot. Only copilot option is a check box for "collapse copilot summary automatically" but it does nothing. I do not want copilot. I do not want my documents in the cloud or copilot learning from them. I just renewed my subscription and this popped up. I will be looking for other office suites if you cannot turn off this unwanted unsolicited 'feature'.

    Is this appearing for people in Australia? I have previously reverted my word to the January 2024 version and i don't want to enable updates unless i can for sure turn off Co-Pilot.

    Copilot appeared this morning (16 Jan 2025 after an update, perhaps fixing the Copilot problem). I did the following:

    FILE > OPTIONS

    Select COPILOT from the list

    Prompt: "Options for working with Copilot in Word":

    Checkbox: Enable Copilot.

    It can be disabled or enabled at this point.

    COPILOT is not listed among my options. I'm from the Netherlands, so I don't know if this is location specific. All I know is I want to excise this tumor from my program and it's driving me nuts trying to figure out how.

    Today 16 january 2025 I found this solution:

    Open a Word file

    Go to the File tab in the ribbon

    Scroll down and click on Options

    Click on Copilot

    Turn Copilot on or off
