This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

I got a MS remote chat human to remove that version and replace wiht old one. Ridiculous , should be optional.
As my subscription expires in January '25, I have been trialing LibreOffice (Version 37.3.58.137) with existing documents created in Office 365. As LibreOffice is different, I had been struggling with LibreOffice with my Excel and Access files.
A friend in the US, provided a link to User Guide documentation from LibreOffice, The Document Foundation website, that can either be purchased in book form or downloaded for Free in Pdf for each of the LibreOffice modules.
I have downloaded the following modules so far for Free in Pdf:
Getting Started 24.8 - 520 pages.
Writer Guide 24.8 - 504 pages.
Calc Guide 24 - 572 pages.
Base Guide 7.3 - 565 pages

I am in the same boat. I am one week out from submitting a review copy of my PhD thesis, and one day out from submitting a post-grad application. The copilot is a nightmare and it is not optional, as I have tried all means to uninstall it.
I will have to roll back to an earlier version and then not accept updates or keep rolling back.
The damn thing now infests all my new documents and my thesis chapter template. I had to stay up all night to reformat the application.
It is a complete breach of how I am required to write as a student, as it is for all other students.
Why would you force this on a whole community that makes us breach education standards?
Please allow us creatives and all students to turn this damn thing off.

What an insensitive and ignorant reply!. This user (like thousands of others) does NOT want useless dross pushed on them. The copilot icon in Word is invasive and unnecessary and its sudden arrival without any option to opt out is sheer bloody arrogance.
