How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    Totally agree with you. I normally would buy the Family Office software from Office Works, where in December 23 it was either $99 or $109Aud that I paid. But now, Office Works is also now $179Aud without any notice of price increase. To me that's about a 70% increase in price.

    It's not all related to supermarkets for high prices.

    It would appear that they are making you pay for it too as the Microsoft 365 home subscription has increased from AUD$139.00 to AUD$179.00 per annum.

    I won't be using word anymore. Or any of Office's programs as co-pilot is just a step too far.

    I am in Australia and I have the same reaction to CoPilot.

    Microsoft, please note: I DO NOT WANT COPILOT. It appeared out of the blue. Please send me an easy way to switch it off immediately.

    I am using Windows 10, with an Office 365 subscription.

    I am a professional book editor, in an industry where MS Word is the standard program. It would be very difficult for me to use any other word processing software.

    I am very angry at having AI foisted on me with no option or request for consent. I am the client, I pay YOU, Microsoft, not the other way round. Sheesh.
