OneDrive Personal Vault cannot unlock, error code 0x8004db90

I haven't been able to access my OneDrive Personal Vault in the past few days. I've tried multiple ways (PC, iOS app, webpage) but none works -

  • on the iOS app, it prompted me to setup personal vault even though I've done the setup a long time ago. After completing authentication, the app popped up with "Unable to complete Personal Vault setup, please try again in a few minutes". I tried removing the app and started fresh and that didn't help.
  • on webpage, after authentication, it popped up saying "There was a problem unlocking your Personal Vault". I tried both Edge and Chrome and got the same results.
  • on PC, onedrive can't unlock my personal vault, and popped up with error code 0x8004db90. I tried unlinking onedrive and relinking it and that didn't help.

Overall this feels like an authentication issue but somehow only affects personal vault access.. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it!

    I have seen the exact same problem, but the error code was 0x8004db94 and not 0x8004db90

    In my case, I managed to fix this issue following these steps given by a Tier-3 Microsoft Engineer:

    ==

    Some users reported they didn't see the "Restore files" as the screenshot at the end of these steps, so make the backup as below:

    Access your files on the Onedrive web page (https://onedrive.live.com/), then go to "My Files" --> open the Personal Vault folder and download your files before

    ==

    1) Exit OneDrive

    Image

    2) Open Command prompt from start menu and paste the following command and hit enter:

    REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Personal /v VaultBackupGuid
    Its ok if this returns ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value. Just continue following the next steps.

    3) Open Credential Manager from start menu

    4) Select the Windows Credential tab

    5) Find the credential named "Microsoft OneDrive Generic Data - Personal Vault VHD info" and click Remove.

    6) Restart OneDrive and try to unlock the Vault

    Then, when you log-in again if do you see this message below, click on RESTORE, otherwise you will lost your files from the Personal Vault.

    These steps above worked for people talking aobut this issue in another post:

    Follow these steps by your own risk because I cannot guarantee it will work to everyone :-)

    Hi Tracy,

    Thanks for your reply. I've tried the your suggestions but it doesn't help :(

    1. I've tried creating a new Microsoft account and confirmed that I can access personal vault for the new account on the web page, but I still cannot access my own account's personal vault on the web page
    2. I've tried adding an alias to my original account, and also making that alias the primary email and re-login to OneDrive. That still doesn't help.

    I have submitted it on the feedback platform here https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/idea/7b9c38eb-d559-ef11-b4ad-000d3a0e6a3a Hopefull it get picked up :(

    Tracy,

    I get the exact same issue if I'd like to access my Onedrive via my browser (Edge).

    Hi Tracy,

    I have the exact same problem (Error Code 0x8004db90).

    It started a few days ago.

    I tried various things like resetting Onedrive, but had no luck.
