Urgent: Files Reverting to Older Versions on OneDrive

Dear Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing an issue where many of my recently used files on OneDrive have reverted to older versions over the past few months. It is only today that I have discovered this issue. I access OneDrive on two PCs, my phone, and frequently online at work.

Typically, I notice a file has been overwritten with an older version when I check the version history and see two entries with the exact same date and time. Often, the overwritten version’s file size matches that of an older version from a few entries back on the list. There is no consistency in the dates and times when this issue occurs. It seems to be happening randomly. I've found that this has occurred with hundred's of my files.

This problem has been very frustrating and has significantly undermined my confidence in OneDrive. Could you please advise me if you're aware of any such issues and if you're working to resolve them. Also, can you please advise me as to how I can prevent this from happening in the future?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards,

Michael

Edit: Further to the above, I've also discovered that OneDrive doesn't sync automatically between my PC and Laptop when I make changes to files. I have to quit and then re-start OneDrive on the other computer in order for it to sync and receive the updated file. It also doesn't automatically sync when I attempt to restore to a previous version. In order for it to update the file back to the pervious version I have to quit and re-start OneDrive (or possibly just pause and resume syncing, which I never tried).

I am having the exact same issue. Three days of work have just gone down the drain with a deadline approaching. And this isn't the first time for me, One drive almost drove me mad whilst I was writing my Master's dissertation. If there is alternative way/app to autosave written work someone please let me know. Given how common this is, there should be a fail safe and this should not be constant source of angst. I have explored all the links available on the internet on how to recover my hours of work. Luckily I was able to find a more recent version because in previous experience of these frustrating crashes I had read an advice on saving backups to a local site. Less work for me compared to the extreme despair I had this morning but really MS you should be better than this knowing the stakes involved for many of us who rely on these functionalities.

My sentiments exactly. Microsoft should know and should do better.

    Hello,

I recently experienced the exact problem as desribed by the OP above, with a number of files reverting to versions from back in July. So firstly, thank you to the OP for posting about the problem - I was starting to question my sanity for a while before finding this.

I reported my problem to Onedrive support, they were helpful, said it was a known issue, and I managed to recover my files via the version history at onedrive.live.com .

However, until Microsoft fix this, my confidence in Onedrive is shattered. Until there's a fix (or until I find a suitable alternative product) I'm having to include a datestamp in filenames to ensure no changes can be reverted.

    So...

    Dear Microsoft Support,

Please can you tell me where to find a bug report reference for this issue which I can track until it is fixed? Or otherwise how can I know when a fix has been provided please?

    Thanks,

    Paul

I've just noticed that OneDrive has made a mess of my files too, after booting up a second laptop which synced to the same OneDrive as my regular PC, but which I hadn't used in a few months.

There's a number of files I modified on the 1st January 2025 which have reverted to a version from October 2024 (OneDrive still shows them as modified 1st Jan, but their content is from Oct 2024).

I also have files which have been recently modified, but OneDrive online are now reporting the current version is October 2024, and which is the old document. If I then go to the version prior to that, which OneDrive reports is from 2021, it's giving me the document I updated a few days ago.

What a mess, honestly lost all confidence in OneDrive after this.

    Hello Michael Surnak.

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to learn that you are currently experiencing files being overwritten by an older version in OneDrive, and I fully understand your distress.

Recently in the Microsoft community, many users have reported similar issues, we have collected this feedback and submitted it to the Microsoft development team, they have been informed of the issue and are actively working on a fix, please be patient for a while.

As the OneDrive servers are currently undergoing a data migration, it is true that OneDrive synchronization may be unstable, which can lead to some issues. For your overwritten files, since community members do not have access to the servers to help you recover them, you can contact the OneDrive support team and one of their specialists will get in touch with you and provide you with further assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

    Best Regards

Eliac | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
