Error code CAA90049 - Any M365 App

Hello, I have a remote end user that is receiving this error code when trying to sign into any M365 app. Once we close the error message the apps work perfectly fine but this happens daily when signing on and I would like to find a permanent fix. I would attach a screenshot but that doesn't seem to be working right now.

  • User enters login credentials and Microsoft authenticator code then this error pops up for any m365 app / teams / OneDrive.
  • User is in another state so can't come into office.

Something went wrong

We couldn't sign you in. If this error persists, contact your system administrators and provide the error code CAA90049.

Error code: CAA90049

Correlation ID: 9a55***1d07

Server message: Session key is empty

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Once they applied that in our Citrix environment it stopped wanting to register the device and the error went away for us.

I have a user with the same issue after he updated and rebooted. Apps repeatedly ask for a sign in, even using the web apps. We also get a 1001 error when signing into Office desktop apps. I have updated Office, cleared credentials, removed / added registry keys, removed folders from their AppData, etc. None of the fixes online are working.

Couple of things. The client I'm having issues with is federated and using single sign on. And I found that I could log into a different Office 365 account in Office and it will accept the sign in. Could be something on the back end with Entra.

    Dear Rob M d,

Good day! Thank you for posting Microsoft Community.

To understand the exact scenario and better help you, I want to confirm if you can log in to your account normally on the Microsoft 365 portal https://www.office.com ?

If Support and Recovery Assistant tool can’t help you solve the issue, you may also try to reset activation state for Microsoft. Please refer to Reset activation state for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise - Microsoft 365 Apps | Microsoft Learn for detail.

    • If you cannot log in Microsoft 365 portal, since you mentioned that Microsoft authenticator code, I suppose your account has been configured Multiple Factor Authentication(MFA). Please contact your Microsoft 365 Admin and help you turn off MFA, then turn it on again. See if you can sign in Microsoft 365 normally.
If none of the above methods solve the issue, may I confirm some information with you? So that I may better help you troubleshooting the issue.

      1. Is it updated Microsoft 365? If not, it is recommended to update to the latest and see if the problem still exists.

      2. Do other users have the same problem?

      3. Does singing in from a different device also cause this issue?

Looking forward to replying from you.

    Sincerely,

    Aurora
