here is the solution. you should specify specific update version, via cmd.

[source] https://borncity.com/win/2024/07/05/microsoft-office-click2run-update-broken-error-code-30088-27/

  1. Disable Microsoft Office Updates (File/Office Account/Update Options and select the Disable Updates option)
  2. Open an administrative command prompt and then enter the following command to go back to specified version.

[action]

in my case it was stuck on 16.0.17726.20126.

in my case i run:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17830.20166

change version number above, as newer versions come out: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/current-channel

Well, I'm the author of the blog post linked above. A reader came back to me with a comment, indicating, that Microsoft has changed the communication method for Office Click-to-Run.

  • Previously, OfficeC2Rclient.exe used the WinInet proxy settings (Internet Settings) to connect to Microsoft's cloud services.
  • Following the June update, OfficeC2Rclient.exe now utilizes the WinHTTP proxy (configured via NetSH) for communication.

The reader was able to configure the WinHTTP proxy via NetSH for his enterprise environment. But this morning (August 17, 2024, CET) I received feedback from two German blog readers, telling me, that the Office C2R Update issue has been solved "mysteriously". So I guess, Microsoft has changed something server-side to fix that issue.

If somebody has more details, feel free to drop me a comment within the blog post linked above.

Addendum: Microsoft seems to have fixed the issue on August 17, 2024 - several blog reader has reported this to me. See also the explanation in my blog post:

Has Microsoft fixed update error code 30088-27 in Office Click2Run?

Hi Gunter:

Please ignore my previous rant.

I confirmed that all my optional privacy settings at File | Office Account | Privacy Settings | Manage Settings | Connected Experiences were DISABLED and re-booted my computer, and I can confirm that my manual updates at File | Office Account | Update Options | Update Now seems to be working today.

Thanks for the heads up. Here’s hoping that Microsoft has released a permanent fix on their end that works for all MS Office C2R users.

Hi Gunter:

Mark Reyes as been posting prolifically about OfficeC2Rclient.exe and reconfiguration of the WinHTTP proxy in multiple threads I've subscribed to on this topic, including their 16-Aug-2024 post # 2696984 in the AskWoody.com topic Office Click-to-Run Updates May be Broken with Latest Version. While that "solution" might be helpful for IT administrators it's beyond the technical expertise of the majority of home consumers affected by this MS Office C2R 30088-27 update error, including myself.

Many (but not all) affected users posting in this MS Answers forum have also found that they can stop this 30088-27 error by enabling the setting at File | Office Account | Privacy Settings | Manage Settings | Connected Experiences | Turn On All Connected Experiences as shown below and restarting their computer (the re-boot is critical), in spite of the fact that this setting says "Connected experiences include things like analyzing content, downloading online content and online file storage. Outlook email services and essential services, such as downloading updates, will still work when this setting is not turned on."

Users who do not want to open a connection to Microsoft's online services like their personal OneDrive (or perhaps even give Microsoft implicit permission to scrape data from their Outlook emails and Word documents to train Microsoft's Copilot / AI language module) should not have to enable optional privacy settings in order to keep their MS Office installation updated. This is a problem that Microsoft needs to fix on their end, and in the mean time I will be keeping all my optional Office privacy settings disabled and using the command prompt method to update my installation and patch any security vulnerabilities.

Just a personal aside to you, but I often visit your borncity.com site and noticed a new pop-up window today that states that "If you would like to use 'borncity.com' without advertising or tracking, you can take out a contentpass subscription for 3,99€ / month". I can't figure out how to decline optional cookies and tracking (including the collection of data you share with your "150 partners") on your site without purchasing a contentpass subscription so I closed my browser tab without reading your blog post at https://borncity.com/win/2024/07/05/microsoft-office-click2run-update-broken-error-code-30088-27/.

The other day, I enabled the "Turn on all connected experiences" option, manually updated to version 2407 build 17830.21066 from the command line, then rebooted the computer. After that, I disabled the "Turn on all connected experiences" option again and was able to check for updates without getting any error messages. (just the normal "You're up to date" message). Today, I clicked Update Now and it started updating automatically (even when the "Turn on all connected experiences" option was not enabled). After Outlook restarted, it is version 2408 build 17928.20066. Now when I click Update Now, I get error code 30088-27 again.

BTW... version 2408 16.0.17928.20066 is available on the release channel. The release notes are following in a short while.
