Folders Shared with me are syncing as internet shortcut in OneDrive on Windows PC

OneDrive reset does not fix this issue, reinstalling the OneDrive app does not fix this issue. If you do not share files with anyone, you should not be affected.

The issue if a user is V1.0 and wants to share to or from a V2.0 user, the share will be a web shortcut. To be clear, the V2.0 migrated account, will still see a web url if it came from a V1.0 user.

I see lots of people asking how you tell whether you have been migrated and others referring to page 261, but it was actually MikeWilliams on page 260 that last detailed the below:

1. Options has no search
2. Selecting an image in a folder no longer has an option to set it as the folder's cover
3. Top level folders "Attachment" and "Documents" are created, and if you delete them they are re-created.
4. Open developer tools,
5. select network tab
6. browse to a sub folder
7. look for an file entry that starts with Children

url is https://my.microsoftpersonalcontent.com/_api/v2.0/drive/root/subscriptions/socketIo if you are on V2

I think the easiest way to see if you have been migrated is "Options has no search" which is better illustrated on page 255.

the reference above to "browse to a sub folder", if it was not obvious, this must be one of your folders, not one that has been shared with you. The relevance of this is one of your folders should match your migration status, where as a shared (from someone else) folder appears to show their status.

It's also not just "starts with Children", it also be starts with "view.delta", "socketIo" and many others.

Interestingly for me, my wife set up the Windows Subscription, she has already been migrated, but I the own most of the folders and have not been migrated, so my wife still sees web shortcuts.

I also share a folder with a work college and when she got migrated to V2.0, all the files I share with her got deleted and replaced with shortcuts in early March 2024. My initial work around for the work college was to set up a new laptop with her OneDrive account logged into on both laptops and of course it works just fine, but not very practical.

Then what I tried is creating a new Microsoft Account on our MS subscription, it got created as a V2.0 account and with it I can now share files normally with my wife. BUT you can't have two OneDrive personal accounts running at the same time. So, I created two users on my laptop, each user has its own OneDrive account. I could in theory move all my folders, via a temporary shared drive (I used my QNAP NAS) to test this and it works just fine. The catch is, I don't want to move to another MS account, it will affect all the other shares I have.

I accept what one day I'll get migrated to V2.0, (I have seen it happen to my wife and my work college), but when will mine migrate, nobody seems to know. If I had an idea of the migration date, I could plan accordingly, it's the not knowing that is so frustrating here (asside from it happening in the first case of course).

What I have started to do is move everything I can off the OneDrive onto my NAS, that way at home we can just share via the NAS. I'm also hoping if I can reduce my storage on OneDrive, I might get migrated sooner as my wife did (who didn't have any shares that she owned.)

Open your OneDrive account (onedrive.live.com). Click on the gear in the upper-right corner, then Options. On the Options page, if the bottom option in the left menu is "Search", you're on V1. If it's "Restore Your OneDrive", you're on V2.

Penultimate voice: "Restore Your OneDrive"

Last voice:  "Search"
