Hi. I had some folders shared from different users in my OneDrive account. I had added the folders to my OneDrive with Add Shortcut to OneDrive button from Shared folders in cloud. The account is logged into a windows pc and every files including the folders shared with my were syncing fine until yesterday. Yesterday night the shared folders were completely removed from the Windows pc and folders are replaced with internet shortcut. This is such a big mess. I have tried unlinking the account and linking it back, changing the location of OneDrive on my windows pc and tried to get a new folder shared to my account and adding it to OneDrive. Nothing works so far. OneDrive has a big part in my daily activities. Please help me resolve this.

Here is the statement from the Microsoft OneDrive product group (Redmond USA) about the OneDrive Personal problem:

***This is related to a backend migration we are doing and unfortunately, we don’t fully support syncing shared folders in the case where one user has migrated and the other has not. We’re doing everything possible to accelerate things so that it can be resolved as soon as possible for users of the feature. When the accounts are migrated, there is automated logic that makes them go back to a syncing folder within several days.***I have heard, that shared Folder issue is gone.
The best thing is: WAIT and do nothing

"9 months ago, Microsoft split OneDrive into two versions: The OneDrive for home and personal use and the OneDrive SharePoint for business". This is not true, and it's not even relevant to the problem. No one is using OneDrive for Business in this issue, and the OneDrive client is smart enough to know the difference regardless.

Now you claim there's permission issues. Considering in this particular issue, we can still access the files through the web interface, it's within Windows there is a problem. There is no permission rule that allows a user to fully access files through the web interface but not through File Explorer.

Then the claims about how we're all using the wrong OneDrive version, or the wrong Windows version. OneDrive checks and installs updates every day. Don't believe me? Go look in Task Scheduler at the OneDrive updating task. You really think that after 8 months and 56 pages that we're all just not using "the latest version"? That Windows Update doesn't force us to reboot every month?

Here is the reality (please correct me if incorrect):

    • The issue has been going on since June 2024
    • Everyone had a working environment, set up per Microsoft's own instructions, which then suddenly stopped working, the shared folder became an internet shortcut
    • The issue was confirmed by Microsoft last year at Add and sync shared folders to OneDrive for home - Microsoft Support
    • On that same page, Microsoft confirms the issue is not fixed
    • The issue appears to be account specific, and only certain users are affected, it is a server based problem, not client software
    • Some users have had success deleting the shortcut and re-making it, this does not work for everyone, and the issue has reappeared for some as well
    • The only known sure workarounds are to make another Microsoft account, copy the folder over to the new account, and re-share the folder from that account, or to switch to another product/service

I am running 23H2. May be it has nothing to do with Windows version !

But since you mentioned the update, I checked my windows update log. I had the automatic update enabled and seems like KB5037853 was installed on the day the issue started. Checked the timestamp in event viewer and I think the issue started after installing this update and subsequent restart. On a related note the event viewer has a Log of an application error for OneDrive like this one on the same date after the update is installed.

    Hi,

Yesterday, I tried to access my OneDrive desktop app, and suddenly the shared folders became links to the web version of OneDrive instead of being available locally. I have been working this way for the past three years, and without any change on my part, they turned into links.

I have tried to remove the app and disconnect it a few times, but nothing helps. I couldn't find any guide or solution to my issue. This situation is preventing me from working efficiently.

Could you please assist me in resolving this issue?

    Thank you,
    Nadav.
