Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder any more, and files seem to be online only.

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac
  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive
  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.
  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

It looks like every so often someone says it's fixed, while new people are hit by the issue. In the meantime Microsoft say nothing.

I've already changed my workflow, I'm not going back to Onedrive until Microsoft make a clear statement as to what the issue is and commit to it being resolved. Otherwise it's not worth the effort.

    Ezequiel

I’m sorry to inform you that a lot of users have been affected by this issue for over a year now and only since a few weeks ago some users regained access to their shared folders, with out doing anything.

It’s not worthy to so whatever you think so updating iOS / Windows, this is an annoying and unfortunate issue from Microsoft OneDrive that couldn’t give us any help of feedback along all these months…

I swapped to Google Drive and will keep attached to it until have any kind of issue.

It's May 2025 and I'm facing the exact same issue.

In March 2025 it wasn't a problem and I managed to download the folder I'm shared with. Now I can't access this folder on the Mac I hadn't made the backup.

Isn't this ever going to be solved?

For me and others who have written about this problem, it just gets fixed without doing anything. I did nothing and one day the shared folders were back as folders. One day everything was fine, the next day it was a URL, then back again to folders.
