"The folder you tried to unselect contains the windows documents folder, which is an important folder in windows and is currently pointed to Onedrive"

When I try to unsync any folder, this error message appears:

"The folder you tried to unselect contains the windows documents folder, which is an important folder in windows and is currently pointed to Onedrive"

This is a new thing that started happening over the weekend, as I use OneDrive on a daily basis.

Rebuilding all the folders and subdirectories are not an option since they are time-consuming and there is not enough space on my local drive (which is why I am using OneDrive and turning folders on and off).

Microsoft, please sort this out.

Thanks for the update. My Onedrive folder has bever been in documents and has worked up until this week. No changes have been made.

Keen to see a resolution for this one as it's driving me nuts.

I just got off the phone with the technician. At first he says the problem is because my OneDrive is in Documents, and told me that the issue will be resolved if I moved it out of Documents. You can try that if you'd like, although that is not the real issue.

OneDrive has been in Documents since 2018, as it was the default location set by Microsoft in the installation process. I sent them a screenshot showing the timestamp of the folder creation (Jan 29 2018), and told them that a Microsoft engineer changed something in the last few days.

I told him I'm not moving the folder location since it was a) the default location set my Microsoft themselves and b) it will break all my linked files. I asked him to figure out what happened in the last few days.

He is now escalating the issue to the Engineering department. I will post an update when I get one.

Exactly the same as you. I am trying to untick a folder on my desktop to avoid it syncing and I get the exact same error message. All worked fine until this week also.

    Not yet, unfortunately.

I have a call with a Microsoft technician scheduled. If you can give me more details about your situation, I can also ask on your behalf.

Did this also just start happening in the last few days? I have a feeling someone at Microsoft did something over the weekend.

With my video editor I save my projects as a "portable" project so that all my project files are located in a single folder that I can move anywhere.

Having files scattered all over the place will cause you to lose files from the project.

None of the device folders are syncing and they never have been.

I usually sync and unsync projects as their status changes so that there is room on my device for the active project.

It is only since this week that I started receiving this error message that prevents me from unsyncing inactive projects, so now there is no room on my device for active projects.

Something at Microsoft changed over the weekend and other users are also similarly affected since then.

I see. So you are using the Choose folders window to remove files from your computer so that they become online-only files.
