Here it is again in case you didnt see it the first time:

When I try to unsync any folder, this error message appears:

This is a new thing that started happening over the weekend, as I use OneDrive on a daily basis.

Rebuilding all the folders and subdirectories are not an option since they are time-consuming and there is not enough space on my local drive (which is why I am using OneDrive and turning folders on and off).

Microsoft, please sort this out.

I just got off the phone with the technician. At first he says the problem is because my OneDrive is in Documents, and told me that the issue will be resolved if I moved it out of Documents. You can try that if you'd like, although that is not the real issue and is not a sustainable solution.

OneDrive has been in Documents since 2018, as it was the default location set by Microsoft in the installation process. I sent them a screenshot showing the timestamp of the folder creation (Jan 29 2018).

I told him I'm not moving the folder location since it was

a) the default installation location set by Microsoft themselves and

b) what if next week Microsoft decides that the User folder - the current default installation location - is now an 'essential' folder which cannot be unsynced anymore and we have to move everything yet again? I'm not going to relink everything every time someone at Microsoft decides to fiddle around with backend settings.

I asked him to figure out who did what in the past week and to restore OneDrive to its full functionality as of August.

He is now escalating the issue to the Engineering department. I will post an update when I get one.

Welcome to the Microsoft community.

To unsync your Documents folder go to the OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup and toggle the Documents folder to OFF.

The "Choose folders" settings allow you to keep online folders from downloading and syncing to your computer. De-selected folders are removed from your computer and remain online only. The Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders cannot be online only and therefore cannot be de-selected.

Moving folders around and renaming them wouldn't work because of the way links work in the Adobe Creative Suite.

I'd prefer it if Microsoft just fixes the issue properly and restore OneDrive to what it was.

Messing up some backend settings periodically and then asking users to restructure their way of working instead of making repairs is not the kind of service customers should- or would - pay for.

You found a project management method that works for you, and I found a method that works for me. The nature of projects are very different, so please try to focus on the question. To reiterate, I am asking about OneDrive, I was not asking for advice on project management.

I tried your suggestion of checking and unchecking "Sync all files and folders in OneDrive". However, now *everything* - over 800GB of data - is syncing, and I cannot unsync *anything* because I am getting the same error message.
