"Unknown error trying to lock file." when opening file in Excel from SharePoint

One of my users with Win 10 pro (upto date) is having trouble opening files (xlsx and xlsm) from SharePoint in Excel, they are getting the error "Unknown error trying to lock file." They are running Excel 2016, fully up to date. They were not having an issue Friday.

Tried the same files on SharePoint on other computers and did not get the same error. I tried via another user account on the computer that is having trouble and got the same error. I tried an Office repair, quick and full, which did not help. Teams and Outlook are on this computer and are having no trouble. I was also able to open word files on SharePoint with no issue.

I'm a little stymied any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi all,

    Recently there was a new incident posted to the Service Health Dashboard (SHD) as an incident SP525140 starting at 2023-03-09 1:50 AM (UTC). The user experience of this incident is Users may be unable to Edit Microsoft Office files in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

    More info: When users try to open Microsoft Excel files, they may receive the error: "Unknown error trying to lock file", and when users try to open Microsoft Word or PowerPoint files, they may simply fail to open, without displaying an error.

    Current status: We've determined that a recent update intended to enhance the Office file user experience contained a code regression that resulted in impact. We've developed a code fix and have begun the process to deploy the fix to the affected environment. We anticipate this fix to be fully saturated by our next scheduled communications update.

    Scope of impact: This event may impact any user trying to edit Office files in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

    Root cause: A recent update intended to enhance the Office file user experience contained a code regression that resulted in impact.

    You may subscribe to this thread or refer to the SHD for updated information. We will also post back here once the issue is resolved.

    Unfortunately reverting and disabling updates for an entire organization is not realistic. We need a fix from Microsoft ASAP. I was hoping the patch yesterday (16.0.16130.20298) would be a fix but it doesn't appear to do anything.
