I keep getting an error message whenever I use onenote that says "your system has run out of application memory". It pops up after a couple minutes and has been going on for about a week now. Prior to this it had never happened. this is extremely frustrating because i need to use onenote for medical school. has anybody else had this issue and how do i fix it? i dont know if it has something to do with the new apple update? Plzzzzz help!!

OneNote engineer here

It's hard to give you an exact date because of the staggered way in which we rollout Office Updates, but I can tell you that an improvement had been checked in.. and its a matter of releasing the update that should reach customer before end of year.

I earned my MD many years ago and am a professor. Same problem here. I think the answer is "you're screwed until Microsoft addresses it." On a brand-new, M2 Mac Studio, it took all of the available memory (64 GB). I have much of my professional (no patient info) in OneNote, which I LOVE, but it crushed my laptop and now is crushing my desktop.

Microsoft - PLEASE PAY ATTENTION AND FIX THIS!

I am also a medical student and have been struggling with this since last semester. I thought it was a Mac problem and had my computer re-formatted which worked for a couple weeks but the issue has begun again.

I broke my notes down into smaller notebooks, compressed the PDF's and only used what's actually necessary. I've also tried having every other application closed when using One Note but it still draws too much processing power. I do not have these issues when I'm using the app on a browser, my ipad or even phone with much less power.

Microsoft: it looks like you have many soon to be physicians who will be needing technology for their future practices. If not a customer service problem, then an investment in your future would be to solve these recurrent issues.

Honestly, its causing such a problem that if I don't find a solution soon Ill have to delete my account and switch programs to one of the recommendations above.

This exact issue is happening to me as well. I’m a veterinary student and onenote has two years of my work on it, and this problem started in august 2023, around the same time as these other replies. It started after creating a new notebook for this school year. I deleted the cache a couple weeks ago and it was working well, but now it’s back to the “run out of application memory” pop up and I have to force quit every few hours. I’m very frustrated. Nothing seems to be working.

Same problem. I’ve closed all but essential notebooks. Before it was maximally 25 GB application memory used, which made my 2017 macbook air very slow. Now it pulls 53 GB just trying to sync. This must be a problem that has occured in the last few months. Since all my notes are on onenote it’s debilitating not being able to use it anymore. Just inserting slides took me 2 hours the other day. Earlier it took only 3 min max.
