Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

    Hello ludovic,

Thanks for the feedback, I can confirm you are using the latest Microsoft 365 suite.

Per your description, may I confirm some related information?

    1. If you close all Office applications, including OneDrive, does the Click-to-Run process still consumes high CPU usage? If not, you may open Office applications one by one to determine which application makes the Click-to-Run process begin to consume high CPU usage.
    2. May I confirm you haven't tried to perform the Online Repair but tried to uninstall (not completely) and reinstall Office?

*The essence of Online Repair is reinstalling Office suite, which may consume much network resources. If you haven't tried, I would like to suggest you try the method in a Wi-Fi environment if it's available.

**If you had already tried to Online Repair Office, you may continue to perform a clean boot in Windows.

    We appreciate your understanding.

    Best Regards,

    Hugo

    Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the detailed information but it seems the Office suite you are using hasn't been updated to the latest. The Build 12827.20268 is released on May 29, 2020, and the latest Build 12827.20336 is released on June 08, 2020.

On the Product Information panel, may I confirm you are using Microsoft 365 for enterprise? If so, may I know whether your colleagues are also using the same version and whether they are experiencing a similar problem?

Meanwhile, I would like to suggest you click the Start menu -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update-> View update history, check whether there are newly installed Windows updates recently.

    Hi Hugo,

I am having this exact same problem. Only started a couple of days ago.

I have updated Office 365, done an online repair and completely uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times without success.

What I have noticed is that when I am not connected to the internet I do not have the problem at all.

It is only when I am connected and I start an Office application, even a blank Word document, it runs at ~20% CPU but uses no other resources such as disk or network to suggest it is trying to update in the background. I have version 2005 (Build 12827.20268 Click-to-Run).

    Please assist.
