Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
This is for MacOS 10.14.5
Microsoft AutoUpdate is v 4.12
Office Updates are 16.26
Worked with first level support to completely clean my Mac of all microsoft products and reinstall latest package.
Ran in SAFE MODE no change.
Ran Cocktail and Disk Utility no change.
Repaired permissions no change.
I post this issue (which I believe is only showing up on my Mac - others in our house don't do this - every time an update occurs. First MAU comes up with an update to itself which doesn't download, then I take a new copy of MAU off the MS website and install it manually, then it works and shows the new updates which then won't download - same issue, so I then download the whole MS office and install it, then everything works again until the next autoupdate which then has the same issues.
Watching the progress bars it appears that the files just don't want to download and save in whatever spot it's trying to put them.
Just to clarify - I have MAU 4.12 now, and I have Office 12.26 installed. Everything is the latest. But MAU runs and says a new MAU needs to be installed and that is 4.12.0 and when it tries to download is when this happens.

Hi Michael and Tom,
As this thread has been last for so long, the community's backend system might consider it as an archived thread and lock it. Thus, please move to the new thread for further discussion on this issue.

It's perfectly OK for you to continue this conversation on this thread. Starting a duplicate thread would only add confusion to the forum. I know Alex is trying to help, but I see no reason to split this conversation.

Oh - sorry about the privacy issue.
Yes - next update I will try looking for StandAloneUpdaterDaemon.
I am now running Catalia 10.15. It's a fairly benign update and I don't expect it to have any affect on the problem.

This seems to be similar to what I'm seeing.
The "azure websites" is a reference to the MS application server where they get the downloads.
I always see downloads going from there to my "var" folder but then when they try to "register/validate" the file it gets an error.
Also I see the "404" error which to me is mainly an http type error that says "I can't find the website" Now I have used their embedded URL before to manually download the applications and install but something in their subroutines is not doing the error handling correctly.
You certainly could be right - permissions handling or that type of issue would be a guess but I've never been able to find that error - sometime I find a partial or full package download in the "var" folder or one of the like "tmp" but when I check it's preferences it appears to be OK.
Now that would also point to the issue with the keychain certificate being open "default" but that was not my problem.
So some kind of error that MS is not anticipating and doesn't handle in their code is my best guess.
Yeah, it looks like a problem that only shows up sometimes on some Macs but you can't just dismiss it as a local Mac problem because the log shows that the error stopping the downloads is happening, their subroutine is detecting it, and doesn't know how to handle it.
Clearly this issue needs the person responsible for writing/maintaining the code for this MAU download to look at this particular log and try to replicate the error to see how the code goes off track.
Meanwhile, each time I have someone from support look at this issue (logged into my laptop remotely) they go through the same list of known fixes that I have - there must be a dozen or so, so I haven't seen anything new from support and no ability to look at the code to see why the error is occurring. The one fix that Alex suggested (StandAloneUpdaterDaemon) is the only one I have not been able to try. Steve tried it and could not find this process running.
I am now running Catalina 10.15 and that's what Steve was running but he could not find StandAloneUpdaterDaemon running using activity monitor.
