Sharing Violations

Since installing Catalina 10.15 and Office 365 16.30 (updates installed the same day (something I will not due again)) when I attempt to save a workbook that I have used for a couple of years, I receive the alert: 'Your changes could not be saved  to xxx.xlsx due to a sharing violation.  I then receive the alert The file format end extension of 646820000.mactf don't match. 

I contacted the Answer Desk who say it is an Apple Product and Apple support said it is a Microsoft problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

    Hi jacsdad - thanks for the information.  Do you have the same issue in either Word or PowerPoint?  If you go to the file in Finder, right-click and choose Get Info, please let me know how the "Sharing & Permissions" are set for these files.

    When I attempted to trouble shoot the problem, I used these sneers:

    1. the spreadsheet that was receiving the error was located in a folder on the iMac.  I access the spreadsheet with an alias in the Dock.  I made a few changes, tried to save it  and received the Security Violation.
    2. accessed the spreadsheet directly within the folder, made a few changes, tried to save it and received the Security Violation.
    3. moved the file to the desktop, accessed the spreadsheet directly (no alias), made a few changes, tried to save it and received the Security Violation.

    Thinking it may have somehow been a corrupted spreadsheet, I created a new one with a different name and folder and received the same errors as listed above.

    Hi all - For anyone who is experiencing this issue, it would be very helpful if you would provide detailed information about the location of where the files are stored that encounter this issue.  If the files are on a network share, what is the operating system that's hosting the shared folder, and how has the shared folder been configured, including which sharing protocol is being used, and any settings that could impact file locking?

    We're trying to determine how to set up an environment where we can reproduce this issue, so we can find the root cause and hopefully address it.  So far, we haven't been able to do so.

    Re. Catalina. We have users on pre-Catalina versions of Mac OS and they report the same problems as those of us on Catalina.

    @Lordsaveme thank you for your suggestions, but i have no time for extensive testing...if i can roll back to 16.29 i will prefer doing that.

    @antonioj.f Previous install packages are available here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac

    Uninstall your current version (although Excel was the main offender I ditched the whole suite), then install 16.29. I had success by removing just the applications, with no need for a 'deep clean' of related files.

    @Lordsaveme I assumed it was a permissions issue (we have plenty of these on our mixed-environment network) but after lots of testing came to the conclusion that, for once, the cause lay elsewhere.
