Microsoft Word attempts to save to Sharepoint instead of local drive

Hi,

When I open a document in Microsoft Word (Office 2016, 365 Pro, Windows 10) and attempt to save it using the F12 save-as function, Word attempts to save the document in Sharepoint, even though I open it on my local drive. I could previously fix this issue by unchecking the "Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open" box in OneDrive options. However, this behaviour still happens sometimes. Upon further investigation with a Microsoft support agent (case number 1XXX2), I believe this behaviour now only happens when I just created a document and it is still uploading online.

In other words: if I open a Word document on my local drive but that it is still showing the upload icon (meaning it's uploading to the cloud), then Word will open a Sharepoint version instead. As long as the document remains open, Word will by default propose to save in Sharepoint rather than on the local drive. Is this a glitch or intentional feature?

Thanks,

Hi All,

We'd like to make a summary about the case, so every community member who comes across this thread will easily find the information:

=================

Issue description:

If we uncheck the option : Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open in OneDrive sync client and make some changes to a document stored in OneDrive, the changes will attempt to save to SharePoint first. The expected behavior is that changes will be saved to local PC first when we close the document.

Current status:

The issue is fixed in OneDrive version 18.025.0204.0007. You can install it from this article: New OneDrive sync client release notes

=================

Regards,

Sky

    Remboy -

    I also upvoted the onedrive.uservoice item. Hopefully that will help bring this to the developers attention.

    Dear Sky (first, thanks for taking over Tisky's on this issue!)

    As I mentioned before, earlier we have tried unlinking the PC, repairing/reinstalling/resetting OneDrive (I have the latest version, 17.3.7294.0108), and the other options you mention. This resulted in me having to re-sync hundreds of GBs of data which took several weeks during which my professional work was seriously impeded.

    I have also posted on social.technet.microsoft with all the details since I have seen elsewhere that advanced issues should be reported here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/30f4a73d-515c-48e4-adc3-997bcc4f6132/office-applications-attempt-to-save-to-sharepoint-instead-of-local-drive?forum=sharepointgeneral. Unfortunately, the conclusion was to open a ticket since the issue is complicated.

    Yet, the engineer I spoke to for my first ticket said he could not help me since I have OneDrive for Business and they only help regular OneDrive users at this section. The engineer I spoke to for the OneDrive for Business ticket says he cannot help either if this is a by-design, built-in feature, only if it is a bug. And he insists it is a voluntary addition from Microsoft, not a bug. So he says he cannot help. He says I would have to add a suggestion at https://onedrive.uservoice.com and wait until enough people upvote my suggestion and hope that the development team will see it and decide to work on this, although this is far from guaranteed.

    Can you see how this is a ridiculous loophole? Please provide another solution. Best.

    PS:

    Jeff Pollard: Thanks for the proposed workaround! (And for identifying the specific replication conditions!). I don't want to try it now in case I need to readily demonstrate the problem with other Microsoft engineers but I will keep this in mind if no formal fixes are proposed!

    TubaOrNotTuba: Thanks for expressing better than I can our common frustration and Microsoft's pure and simple denial of the existence of this problem currently. And thanks for your efforts with your ticket and the troubleshooting team too.

    All: I just want to say thanks all for your support, Bob McKinnon, Alec Webster, Clofff, Jeff Pollard, Clifford Boobyer, TubaOrNotTuba, and Aapo Kuusela. Thanks for sticking together for this issue, hoping Microsoft will provide a workable solution ASAP.

    I have exactly same issue. Very frustrating as we are operating in a developing country where internet connections are slow and expensive. Any resolution to this yet Microsoft? Don't tell me to re-sync everything again as all our +50 users have the same issue.

     Get rid of the junk code that even allows Office to save directly to SharePoint if One Drive is running.  Basically you need an If-Then statement.  If OneDrive is running THEN DON'T save to SharePoint.  It's VERY SIMPLE code.

    Hi Tuba,

    I certainly can relate to your frustration since we are experiencing it here.  Do you think MS should completely remove the feature to save to SharePoint first?  Some folks may utilize the collaboration features when working with a team.  I am thinking what would help all of us is for Office to respond correctly to the "Use Office to sync files" setting in OneDrive.  That way the option can be toggled, if it's off, let OneDrive handle it.  Fix that bug and we would be very happy.
