Issue:

When opening an Office application, you may see the following error message:

"Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled. Microsoft Office will now close."

IMPORTANT: This error appears if you have this Office 2016 build: 16.0.7167.2040. If you don’t have this specific version and you’re getting this error, or you’re getting a different error, we recommend you create a new post. To check your Office version, choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program in the list and check the version number.

Status: Fixed

This licensing issue has been resolved in Office 2016 version 16.0.7167.2055 or later. To get the latest update, please run an online repair of Office 2016:

  1. Restart your computer. Don’t open any Office applications when you’re back on your desktop.
  2. Run an online repair of Office from the Control Panel.

IMPORTANT: Please choose the Online Repair option instead of Quick Repair. If you run Quick Repair, the latest build version doesn’t get installed. 3. Restart the computer again and open the Office application. 4. Click File > Account, and verify the Office version under Office Updates in the Product Information section. It should be a newer version than 16.0.7167.2040.

If you’ve done the above step and you continue to get the same error message, please do the following:

  • Choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program, and check the Office version.
  • If the Office version isn’t 16.0.7167.2040, create a new post with the error you’re getting along with the exact Office build version.

I agree with all the people who feel it's time Microsoft compensated us for the effects their product has on our businesses and personal efficiencies. If a product is not fit for purpose, and this new download of Windows certainly isn't as far as destroying access to programs like Outlook is concerned, in ordinary life we're entitled to compensation. We need a lawyer to tell us how to do it, and whether the clauses in the agreements we sign up to are an abuse of position. I have a sinking heart when I see my computer grinding through its update routine, and to be greeted with 'Hi' this time is just sick-making. In addition, the instructions for how to get round this are just unintelligible to someone like me who isn't an experienced computer programmer or reconfigurer. I need VERY SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS aimed at a NORMAL ORDINARY PERSON, who is nevertheless GETTING VERY ANGRY. I have two proposals and a report to complete and I'm totally reliant on Outlook to ship them to the people who need them............................. Go figure out how much this kind of crap is costing me!

Absolutely unacceptable. I am a corporate user and it is simply unworkable. When can we expect the fix?

Same here. I've been through this more times in the last 2 weeks than I care to count. Every permutation of repairs, re-installs, flushing permissions and registry keys and reboots, etc. Nothing works. It has negatively impacted my work. Here I am trying to wean my department off their Macs and I had to drive a presentation off of my Windows Phone via Continuum instead of my SP4. MS should be embarrassed by this. They are supposedly retrenching from the consumer products market to the enterprise market and you managed to screw up one of those foundational enterprise tools. Nice job of regression testing guys. We don't want apologies we want to get back to work.

I was wondering what version of Windows you are using.  I am using Windows Anniversary Edition.  I wonder whether problem is limited to that OS and maybe the OS people should be working on this instead of the Office programmers.

    Hi Dave,

We apologize that this is causing so much customer pain. We've made some fixes in ours update .2060 or later. Are you able to update via the steps provided in the original post?

    Thanks,

    Michelle V.

The update does not fix the account/key problem.  I updated the current office installation and that did not fix it.  Then I uninstalled Office 2016, rebooted and reinstalled it fresh.  I ran update and it said my installation was up to date.  Brought up Word and it asked for my key and that did not work then I tried repairing with my account instead and that did not work.  Do you employ any testers any more or is that the exclusive job of your customers now.  By the way, I am talking about Office 2016 Home and Student, not 365.  Also, my old 2010 Office does not work or install properly in the Win 10 Anniversary Edition either.  It used to run fine under Win 10.
