The server you are trying to access is using an authentication protocol not supported by this version of Office.

since windows update 1511, or since i installed the new office 2016 apps in my office 365 for small business environment, i got this message more and more frequently when my laptop starts, or tries to access the onedrive for business server using the groove.exe program. it was getting annoying. it lasts for weeks now. i tried several entries in the communities and found nothing helpful. i removed and reinstalled the office 2016 apps three times and nothing changed.

now i managed to identify where groove.exe resides (c:\program files\microsoft office\root\office16) and delete it to cap this nonsense. i know this solution does not help those poor people relying on microsoft and using good old groove under it's onedrive label to store and exchange sensitive data. i used it to share photos with my business colleagues; this no longer works but is not vital. the data once uploaded using groove are still safe on my sharepoint site and remain accessible using the browser.

i strongly urge microsoft to re-install the authentication protocol used by office 2016 because this issue turns its loyal users away from all its other cloud offerings. moreover, i expect a statement from microsoft why quality controls was not able to prevent this issue. it is a serious violation of the office 365 contracts with microsoft.

    And another observation: Step 7 is actually not needed, as after ending the GROOVE and the MSOSYNC processes using the Task manager Detail view, OD4B is actually no longer running and the icon in the taskbar is about to disappear when trying to click Exit. It is essential also to close MSOSYNC; clicking Exit on the OD4B icon only stops GROOVE. Furthermore, don't forget to close Outlook and any other Office application as well, or the workaround won't work

    I fear it's not the final answer.

    The method describe can be repeatedly used to re-start sync for some time. However, the "Unsupported server" pop-up can reappear after some time. in my case it was after successfully sync'ing a few thousand files. Redoing step 1 to 8 makes synchronization work again for some time. But you cannot tell whether it works for one single additional file or the few thousands I occasionally observed. Thus. it's a workaround but not the answer.

    Hi Thomas,

    By checking the escalated case, good to know that the issue is solved by following the workaround below. We’d like to share the workaround here to benefit other community members:

    Issue Description:

    ================

    The server you are trying to access is using an authentication protocol not supported by this version of Office.

    Workaround:

    ================

    1.      End the GROOVE and MSOSYNC processes.

    2.      Open Word / Excel / PowerPoint (or any Office app that is not OneDrive For Business).

    3.      Click the Switch Account at the top right.

    4.      Click Add Account.

    5.      Add the account that you actually need to sync that particular library.

    6.      Close the application.

    7.      Close OneDrive for Business. (You need to actually right click in the taskbar and click Exit).

    8.      Open OneDrive, and attempt to sync the library. You should not be prompted with the error message.

    * If these steps do not work, please remove all signed in accounts, and then attempt to sync the library which should prompt appropriately. After the library syncs, feel free to add those identities back.

    Again, appreciate your working with us.

    If this helps you, please let us know by marking "Yes" the post which was helpful, or answered the question.

    Thanks,

    Lingyu Sun

    Hi Chee, I'll do. From the support engineer, I understand that the issue is under investigation and has no easy fix, unfortunately. All observations made and reported may help understanding the root cause.

    In the mean time, let's remark that a manual workaround - uploading and downloading manually from the browser - still works, and since the browser allows this for folders, it still might allow relying on OD4B for collaboration. Also, Word Online seems unaffected by this issue.
