Margins change between desktop and mobile

OK.

Document with margins set at .2 inches.

No phantom header was added.

When I reopened the document on my computer, it was in web layout view rather than print preview.

I used dropbox rather than OneDrive.

In my post of October 3:

While you have given us the margin settings, you have not given us the distance of the Header and the footer from the edge of the page and I note that your top and bottom margin setting are less than the default values of 12.7mm and if you did not change those defaults, that is likely the cause of the issue.

Charles, do you have a version of that link to which I would have access permission? I get a 403 Forbidden error.

1. Charles, while waiting for your new link I have looked up your thought. I refer to, for example, this post on Microsoft Techcentre: Opening Word 2007 docs in Word 2013 and formatting is changed?? . Of course, depending the printer driver, installed fonts and other specifics, a document can look different from one machine to another - I can tell you from personal experience that this is a lot less the case now than 20 years ago. Of course this does not explain the addition of a significant formatting element (i.e. Header) from one machine to another. The formatting changes that many can experience, such as fonts and printer drivers, would explain the shift of the document by one line, and that I have not pointed out as my problem in this discussion.
2. See previous posts, as you say.
3. In the absence of headers and footers the margin is limited by the printer driver, not the non-existent header. Of course, if I am wrong, do tell.

I would remind you that, when you discussed a similar matter on lawyerlist, Emma said "If I create a document using a custom template saved on my computer, and then send that document to a third party (on a non-networked computer - e.g., a client), will the styles be displayed correctly?" and you replied "Probably..."(link)

1. The article you linked is not applicable to your situation. Nowhere in it are margins or headers mentioned, for good reason.
2. Again, pdf is the file format to do what you want. If you cannot do it in pdf or an image format, you cannot do it.
3. The room reserved for the header is different from a header. It will be used even if there is no header. You were given the dialog to change this. Did you?

As for my post on lawyer list, that referred to Styles, not to margins or headers/footers. If care is taken, Styles do not get altered. That is the main subject of Shauna's article which I trust you've read by now.

I am the lightweight among those who have responded to your questions. Doug and Stefan know more about Word than most of the people working on Word at Microsoft. I do not think any of us would want to use Word on Android. I installed it on my phone and uninstalled it the same day. To my (scant) knowledge, the Android version, in and of itself, will not make any changes to the document structure.

I will reinstall Word on my phone and run through your procedures that you gave in reply to Stefan's last post.

Thanks, Stefan. A good article - I always like these urban myth-busters. I have double-checked my document in light of this, testing for the three points covered.

"Automatically update document styles" is unchecked.

The document is based on Normal template using the Normal style. I'm old-fashioned like that, especially for a 2-page resume.

The printer setting doesn't help either, because changing printer does not add a header to the document. The printer question could explain the line shift of the document once I've removed the header - I'm not worried about that as Android and Windows use printers and printer settings in such completely different ways that I et a feeling there might be one poor soul in Google headquarters who might be able to explain it, and then we would have to tie that together with Microsoft to see how they implement it (thank goodness my phone is a Nexus or it would get even worse).

Looking at the discussion until know, I have been wondering whether I am going mad. So I have done something to test it, again. Follow this process to see what happened:

• On laptop.
  • Double-check original document (call it document x) for formatting, headers, footers, etc.
  • Double, double-check using the "view all" button on the "home" ribbon.
  • Save to OneDrive.
  • Close.
• Wait a bit for sync.
• On Android.
  • Open Word.
  • Open document x.
  • Observe what looks like new header.
  • Save as new document (call it document y) to OneDrive.
  • Close document
  • Close Word
• Wait a bit for sync
• On laptop
  • Open document y
  • Observe new header.
  • Double-check for formatting and headers and footers. Double check with "view all".
  • Confirm: The header has been added.
  • Remove header from document y
  • Save document y on OneDrive
  • Close
• Wait a bit for sync
• On Androiid
  • Open document y
  • Observe that header has re-appeared.
  • <I think we can see a loop occurring here, so I'll stop)

As I have previously posted, I repeat : I was hoping to either find out that I have done something wrong, or in the case of a bug let users and MS developers know that there is a bug which should be sorted out. In light of the above and what I have stated in previous posts, I can not find my error and am drawn to the bug conclusion. The incessant comments I have received thus far, generally treating this issue as if I was a noob, leads me to believe that there is no logical explanation for Word doing this except that it is a bug.

If I have missed a move in treating my document, then please tell me what it is. If I saved my document as a PDF I would definitely be sticking my head in the sand as that "solution" does not eliminate the apparent tendency for Word for Android to add Headers.
