Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    What I am baffled about is, seeing this should be easy to fix ....

    why Microsoft is not fixing it?

    All they have to do is a trace to find out where the underlying code is spinning its wheels.

    "easy fix", not so much. The problem is first being able to recreate the problem ... You can only chase down a problem, where the "code is spinning it's wheels", if you can consistently recreate the problem. 

    Yes, they may have even released defective code if they could not trace the problem and it appeared on a sufficiently small percent of the test machines.  Unlike MAC, the Windows environment is chaotic both in hardware and software combinations so it can be hard to recreate a problem.

    These are the realities of any business, not just software. Products with known defects continue to be built and sold even after the first fatalities happen (not just trivial inconvenience of slow typing), because the true root cause cannot be identified. And even after if the "business case" says it is cheaper to continue. Airlines are probably the prime example of bloodthirsty business cases.  But the auto industry is not far behind, not to mention tobacco and oil ...

    Thank you, Sagnik, for your prompt response.

    1. I repaired Office 2016 installation as per the above link. It did not fix the slow typing problem but when I removed all spell-checker options it almost fixed it, still a little slower than Word 2013. BUT this morning the problem was back there again.
    2. Next I opened Word in safe mode. It did fix it BUT after about 15 minutes or so the problem was back. [Safe mode has the additional problem that most of the options, significantly Proofing options, are not available.]
    3. Next I checked COM Add-ins. There were none.
    4. Lastly I tried to do a clean reboot as per the link BUT the instructions are for Windows 8 and my Windows 10 does NOT have any of the options mentioned therein.

    Conclusion: although briefly the problem was gone, it always came back.
