Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    I am experiencing the same issues starting in mid December.  It has been getting worse over time.  I now have to type a sentence at a time and wait sometimes 60 seconds for it to show up.  This has made word completely unsuable for me.

    This is on a relatively new Microsoft Surface Book i7.  There is no reason whatsoever for this kind of performance in Word.  I have tried all of the fixes listed in this thread and none of them have corrected my issue.

    I have tried reinstalling Word, disabling HW acceleration, turning off spell check and grammar, etc.  None of the proposed solutions has had any effect whatsoever on my performance.  I need a solution to this issue quickly as it is impacting my ability to do business.

    This is extremely disappointing given what we are paying for O365 and if we are going to pay monthly for a product I would expect better support.

    Come on, Microsoft, can you please get your act together? It's 2016 and you have tons of people who are unable to type properly in your freaking word processor. Is it too much to ask that you sell a word processor that works properly in this day and age, so that we can just type things without having to go through long, convoluted troubleshooting steps? Come on, it's really pathetic.

    I'm having the same issue here. This is 2016 and Microsoft can't even succeed in getting a freaking word processor to TYPE correctly without a huge lag, and then can't even get their act together to fix it. What a disgrace. So frustrating.
