Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?]

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

Zahir.

The problem IS easy to recreate. My document has it, all the time. And there is at least one member of this community who has the identical problem, from which I surmise there are possibly others among silent users here and outside.

The least Microsoft should be easily able to do is let users revert to Word 2013 and restore our productivity.

    Hi Zahir,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

The issue might be due to non-Microsoft programs conflicting with Office applications or might be due to the issues with Office installation. Let me assist you with the issue.

Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode:

Example: Open Word in safe mode

    1. Close Word.
    2. Press the Windows key+ R on the keyboard to open Run window.
    3. In Run window and type winword /safe

Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

    1. In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.
    2. Under Manage select COM Add-ins.
    3. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.
    4. Try to open Word and check if it works fine.

Note: Similarly follow the steps to disable add-ins for other Office applications

Refer to the link mentioned which discusses about the similar issue and check if it helps:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

Step 2: Repair Office 2016 installation:

Refer to the link mentioned to repair Office 2016 installation:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx

Step 3: Boot the system in clean boot.

Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the

    Office program.

Refer to the link mentioned to boot the system in clean boot:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After checking in clean boot ensure to reboot the system in normal mode which is explained in the same article.

If Office applications work fine in clean boot then follow the complete article, perform advanced clean boot to check which program is causing the conflict. Once you have found the problem program, contact appropriate technical support team to update the program.

Hope it helps. Please post us if you need any further assistance with Office products.

    Thank you.

I tried changing the default printer. It didn't help.

What I am baffled about is, seeing this should be easy to fix (given that in Office 2013 the problem did not exist), why Microsoft is not fixing it? All they have to do is a trace to find out where the underlying code is spinning its wheels. Either that or allow customers to revert to the previous version. Needless to say this is most frustrating and is not going to win them fans. [All of this begs the question: did Microsoft's performance-related regression testing not catch it? If it did, why was it released?]
