Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

Just tried to install Service Pack 2 for 32 bit version, both from Windows Update and from the Microsoft download page.  Neither install will complete.  Anyone else having this problem?

    • What is the exact error that you encounter when you tried to install Word 2010?
    • How did you try to install it?
    • Are you trying to install a standalone Word 2010 or is it part of Office suite?

    microsoft word 2010 service pack 2 the installation of this package failed...

    the error is still present even in Feb 2017...why Microsoft?...why?

    I get an error 643 when trying to install Service Pack 2 Office 2010.

    Now that XP is no longer supported, I decided to change to W7. When I installed Office 2010 (32-bit, obtained by download), I thought that I might just as well install SP2. It failed repeatedly. Having looked here and elsewhere, I eventually found a solution

    • it is all to do with the location of the installation files.

    Step 1: run the Office 2010 installation programme again until it has extracted the files and you have the yellow window headed, "Change your installation of ..."

    Step 2: using Windows Explorer browse to the folder, "C:\Users*your user name*\AppData\Local\Temp\OWPE476.TMP".

    Step 3: copy the contents of this folder to the root of a USB stick.

    Step 4: copy SP2 installation file to the same place.

    Step 5: if you backed up your system before installing Office 2010, well done! Recover the system. (Going back to a restore point might work here too.) Otherwise start again from scratch!

    Step 6: using your USB stick files, install Office 2010 by using setup.exe directly.

    Step 7: run the SP2 installation file from the USB stick.

    That took time and effort to work out - what a palaver!

    In theory, an alternative approach is to use Windows Update, but persuading it to update other Microsoft products may take a similar degree of persistence.
