Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

Try using the Fix It in method 2 of this tip to try and nuke any "bits and pieces" of 2003 that may be lurking in your system

Method 4: Remove manually

Method 2 in this tip does a more thorough job that the “normal” uninstall via Programs and Features (aka Method 1 in the tip). The Normal uninstall is designed with the assumption that you will be re-installing Office. It does NOT delete everything. It leaves configuration files like NORMAL.DOTM and other templates etc. and it also leaves configuration Registry entries. These “carry-overs” may contain corruption that is causing your problem.

I tried this and got the message that  'copy of Office 2003 is corrupted' on my machine.

I am running Office Home & Student 2010 on Windows 7.

Any suggestions as I can't find 2003.

Well, I found out that when downloading the full installation file for MO2k10 SP2 64 bits sometimes the files is not ok even the download process finished correctly and it gets as corrupted. Downloading the file again and after installing the file in one computer correctly then copy the file manually to all your pc's and it will work. Please be sure you download the language and bits version that apply for your system (32 bits or 64 bits).

I've found that it will install if you install all other updates first and then SP2

One last point if anyone from Microsoft is listening.  Given SP2 purports to be a roll-up of a lot of earlier updates to MS Office, how come the net increase in disk space (or more to the point SSD space on tablets) is so huge?  The new file in c:\windows\installer is over 600Mb - have all the earlier replaced updates not been cleared out? 

 

Could we have an update that just reduces disk space usage, please (SSD or otherwise)? 

Ask and you just might get!  Today, Windows Update Cleanup arrived (as an update, natch) and, oh wonderful thing, I got back 2.6Gb of a struggling 32Gb on my tablet!  Lovely stuff.  Thanks, MS (really, thanks, not sarcasm! ;-)
