office 365 Word won't let me type into a new document

I've had Office 365 for a while now and all was good.

However for the last four weeks, or so, I have not been able to type into a new Word document. If I try to the pc just pings at me and refuses to type. No other office programme is doing this. If I open an old document, or save a new document before typing, close it then open it I can type into it.

I have Win 8 and have only installed updates from windows and new video drivers since the problem began.

I have deleted the normal template and let it recreate one on opening, but the problem still exists.

Any suggestions?

I have solved the problem, but forgot to come on here and say how!

After playing about with the various options in Word I finally tried turning off the start screen that popped up when I started Word.

Not sure why, but now that it's turned off and a blank document opens straight away I can now type into a blank document again.

    I can not open four files that were just saved. This is one of them. 

    file:///C:/Users/guill/Documents/ENVEJECIENTES/Reglamento7924paralaEvaluaci%C3%B3nyRegistrodeEntidadesCertificadorasdelCursodeCapacitaci%C3%B3npara.pdf.html

    Something so simple, the system downloaded the file and now I can not open the file. I am an Office 365 subscriber and can not access them for assistance. I this another Microsoft glitch?

    I can't get into my word document. I opened up one and it want let me type. I am doing a paper for my class.

    Hi,

    In office 365 what you call the 'backstage panel' is called the start screen in the options.

    file>options>general

    then right at the bottom of the list un-ick 'Show the start screen when this application starts'.

    Thank you both.

    Could you confirm, are you talking about the "Startup" dialog that shows loading progress, or the "Backstage Pane" showing all of the template options for new documents.
