Microsoft Office Upload Center cache constantly needs repair

I originally posted this in Office365 as that was the forum I was sent to from my Administrator panel. However, they have said to post here instead. So here goes.

Since a few days ago (around the time I installed Lync Basic instead of Lync 2010), the Microsoft Office Upload Center constantly needs repair. I have deleted the caches in User/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Office/14.0/OfficeFileCache and also /15/OfficeFileCache

It is the one in /15.0 that is the issue (now up to OfficeFileCache - 10.old).

When I try the repair option, it says something is accessing the cache and please close all Office apps. Even if there is no Office app running. I stopped Lync automaticallly starting, rebooted and still the same. I have to close in the systray SkyDrivePro and SkyDrive and then the Repair can continue. Then the error is cleared.

I can leave it for 10 minutes and the Upload Centre icon sits in the systray quite happliy. Until I open Windows Explorer and click on the SkyDrivePro icon, I can see my SkyDrivePro files in Explorer as normal with the green ticks, the SkyDrivePro icon in systray says it's up to date (nothing being processed) and then the Office Upload Center error comes back.

"The Microsoft Office Document Cache encountered a problem and needs to be repaired."

I have Office 2010 on the desktop and Office365 as my company's main work environment.

I'm baffled. How can I stop this happening? Thanks.

I have Office 2010 on my desktop and Office365 as the work environment as stated above. The only Office 2013 components are SkyDrivePro (which used to work fine without these cache issues) and Lync (just installed via Office365 as instructed by the Office365 site to upgrade the Lync2010 I used to have which worked fine).

You guys might want to look at this reply in another forum:

I am on a home peer to peer network with office 2013 so it may not be a solution if you are on a corporate domain but the solution suggested solved all my problems, including the corrupted cache that you are discussing.

That's very similar to my experience. Including following the procedures as suggested to uninstall and delete the Cache folders which eventually stopped SkyDrive pro working at all, creating another profile where it does work. And then back to the main profile.

Not only did this take 8 hours over the weekend but I then raised support with Office 365 and we spend all Monday afternoon and all Tuesday afternoon instaling and uninstalling in various orders. Although my stand-alone client was the latest, they insisted on doing it twice more (at 250MB download each time). Then when you uninstall, you have to repair Office 2010 (sometimes it started it's own installer) and when you get back to that, the same 107MB of Windows updates have to be redone.

The last attempt was he wanted me to download and install the MOSDAL and Network Monitor and take some data for each profile and email it in. I did that and his email server wouldn't accept it because the 17MB of the logfile was too big! You couldn't make it up. Anyroad up,I uploaded it to SkyDrive which still works and sent him the link. I was promised a call back today but it's now 4.30pm local time and no call yet.

My guess is that some recent update - or Lync Basic - doesn't recognise the cache properly. It's expecting an Office 2013 - or "Wave 15" environment and it's there but within a Wave 14 envirinment and it gets it's little undergarments in a twist.

I actually have screen shots of this issue happening without SkyDrive Pro, just Lync Basic. It also seems to need some interaction with Windows Explorer to trigger the failure - even just opening it and looking at the folders. This may be a co-incidence.

If Microsoft support follow the case up, I will report back either way. Sheesh. Good luck one and all.

I'm having a client that keeps having the same recurring problem. I did a complete trashout on her system and reinstalled all the Office programs and it worked fine for awhile but now the problem keeps cropping up. I punted it up to the network engineer because I'm plumb out of ideas. If it were up to me I'd have the client load any needed excel documents to a stick and assign her a new laptop. then I'd take my recovery disk and restore her current machine back to factory defaults.

I'll definitely try this next time I face this issue.

    Thanks for sharing..

We are an IT consulting company and I just helped a client facing this problem, so I thought I'd share the solution here to hopefully save others (quite a lot) of time...!

Client has an Office 365 Premium subscription and she had the Skydrive Pro client installed from Office 2013.

    Solution was:

    • Remove the contents of C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw
    • Remove C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache and possibly other "old" folders in this location.
    • Install the SkyDrive Pro stand-alone client from:

(which integrates nicely with Office 365)

Is this still an issue? I long ago gave up on (and uninstalled) SkyDrive Pro, but had another look a few days ago.

I clicked the Sync button in the SkyDrive page of Office 365 , and found that now there's a link that says "Get the SkyDrive Pro app that's right for me". I clicked, downloaded the (updated) SkyDrive Pro from the page it takes you to, and it all works well now.

It seems the new SkyDrive Pro application is Click-to-Run and so is compatible with that version of Office.

Pretty sure this is now all wrapped up, and hopefully I can stop getting emails when someone replies. ;)
