OneNote for Mac crashes on start

<p>Today, when using OneNote for Mac my MacBook Pro crashed. After rebooting, it told me OneNote had caused the crash. Now, everytime I open OneNote, the app crashed immediately. I've tried re-installing through the App Store and removing caches but it keeps crashing on start.</p><p></p><p>What to do? Most important is there are a lot of unsynced changes I cannot afford to lose...</p>

I was able to fix the crash on startup by following these steps from another thread:

  • Delete this folder: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac
  • Delete this folder: ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office
  • Open up “Keychain Access” app on your Mac, and search for “MicrosoftOffice”. If OneNote recognized that you signed in, you will have an entry with a long name. Delete it.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Try launching OneNote and signing in again.

    "...my computer does NOT contain any folder called "containers" and also does not contain a folder called "Group."  Those folders simply do not exist."

    Richard ~ There are two Library folders in OS X and I wonder if the explanation is that you're looking in the wrong one which is here:

    Macintosh HD > Library

    The correct Library is here:

    Macintosh HD > Users > [Home name] > Library

    ...To access that correct Library, in the Finder click on the Go menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen, press and hold the ⌥ (Option) key and then choose Library which should now appear under the Go menu. See if that Library folder contains a Containers folder.

    Assuming you have everything synced to the Microsoft Cloud THEN Download AppCleaner from the App Store. Drag the Microsoft OneNote app from the Applications folder to App Cleaner program window. Delete everything associated with OneNote by pressing the "Delete" button.

    Go to the App Store and reinstall Microsoft OneNote. Enjoy.

    All other apps work perfectly fine. Recreating my user account is not an option. Guess OneNote's trying to start up from some cache or trying to read a corrupt file and cannot.

    Then I guess it is a user account corruption, the simplest solution would be to recreate your user account in the new one.
