When I double click any Excel file in windows explorer, Excel starts up maximized and I can see the ribbon but the whole grid area where my data should be is blank, no gridlines or row/column headers. If I "restore down" the Excel window then everything appears as normal.
I sometimes get subsequent Excel crashes.
I also get an Excel crash by clicking on an Excel file in windows explorer, as if to preview it. The Excel file preview function is not working since I installed Office 2013 Professional.

This old to this post but someone else might be looking for the problem like I was.
I have come across this problem and found that updating the video drivers fixes this problem.
I tried everything listed in this discussion - I changed the names on the 2 xlb files, checked to disable the accelerating, I rolled back my video drivers, but my problem was that when I double clicked a workbook, the workbook didn't open. Excel opened, but not the workbook, i.e. it said "Excel" at the top, not " 'name of file' - Excel". The workbook wasn't opening, but once in Excel, I could go to FILE, OPEN, then navigate it to it and open it.
Anyway, I used the online repair option in the Programs & Features in the Control Panel and it worked. This discussion is a rat's nest.

When in one of the suspect spreadsheets click on view, uncheck the formula box and exit out, okay to "not save changes" when exiting but do leave the formula box unchecked. Now try and open that file through explorer again. Let me know if this magical way works for you, it did for me after every other method tried I found it through frustration. Have a Great Day!
