I am finding Publisher 2013 unbelievably slow, so slow as to be unworkable.

I have a new laptop and it handles all programs well including Photoshop but Publisher 2013 is extremely slow.  Even highlighting text can take over a second.  Earlier versions of Publisher are fine.  Can anyone suggest a cause and a solution?

Perhaps uncheck the "use Office to sync files faster..." setting in SkyDrive.

[Edit] After posting the above, I ran across another possible fix:

In Publisher go to File > Options > Advanced and check 'disable hardware graphics acceleration'.

I also had this problem.  I didn't when I first installed Publisher, but after about a week it became so slow it was driving me crazy!  I tried all the options that were listed in this forum, and none of them helped.  I finally just ended up uninstalling Microsoft Skydrive all together - I wasn't using it anyway - and bam!  Problem fixed! Publisher now runs great!

I was struggling with the same slow unusable situation with Publisher 2013.    I dropped back to Publisher 2010.  I do not have the time nor would I expect to fuss around trying all these patches/delete patches/updates.

I have pretty good efficiency editing a 68.9MB pub doc in Pub2010 but it was too big to save as jpg or pdf or anything other than .pub.   Switching back to 2013 I was able to create a  9.7MB pdf but still could not export a jpg.

    Judging from your previous reply, I shall conclude that you've never run the McAfee removal tool.

    With all due respect to my colleague, the mere presence of the McAfee application is not causing the behavior so I don't think you need to disable it.

    More questions:

    1. Properly configured, CCleaner will prompt you to make backups of the changes you're about to make using the Registry Cleaner component - but you must accept the prompt & create the backup. Backups are saved to My Documents folder by default. Do you have those backups? See http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/faq/using/how-do-i-restore-registry-backups
    2. Is Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome the system's default Browser?
    3. Do you usually use Firefox or Chrome instead of IE?
    4. Have you ever encountered a prompt from Internet Explorer about a blocked, outdated ActiveX control [1] similar to the image below?

    I am also interested in any insights PA Bear might have in the 'sluggish Publisher 2013' issue, and look forward to his response, especially how McAfe can 'slow down' an Office program.

    In the meantime try disabling McAfee temporarily and see if that makes any difference. I must admit that I have avoided McAfee and Norton products in the past because they have not played well with Office and other products and have been such resource hogs.
