Unspecified Error, word/document.xml, Line:2, Column: 0

Dear document savers,

It appears that due dates for assignments makes Word eat documents.

Like others I have a corrupted .docx document.  I have tried every trick in the book I can find and am now resorting to the next level of knowledgeable help.

The document crashed whilst working on a formula around the 3rd last page from memory (page 12 I believe).  After waiting etc. I closed and reopened the document and found then that it would go crazy when I got to the area I was last working in, and wouldn't scroll or display content properly.  When I tried again to close and open it wouldn't open it.  Nothing so far has worked.

It now gives the message:

"The file Assign 3 Answers.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

"Details"

"Unspecified Error"

"Location: Part: /word/document.xml, line: 2, column: 0"

I have uploaded the file here

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8CyUQXlwkYeUXdmVl9acWZTUEU

I can open in Googledocs but without drawings or equations.  It opens in viewer.zoho.com but still cannot open a saved copy in Word 2010

I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any fixes for me.

Sincerely,

Rowan

The Google Docs copy was a DOC rather than a DOCX, but I downloaded it and had a look. I snipped out the  BH  from the second formula following "for Triangle CBH" on page 19. That will need replacing and close proofreading that area is highly recommended.

There is some strange pagination and I don't know exactly why that is nor even if the pagination is intentional.  The actual corruption looked like it was due to many reformatting changes, resulting in empty formatting tags.

I've uploaded a repaired copy of the DOCX to my SkyDrive here for you to download . Be sure to get service packs for Office 2007 or 2010 installed whenever possible before further editing is performed.

If you upload a copy of the file to a folder on your OneDrive and set that FOLDER to be shared and get a link to the folder and paste it into a message that you post back here, someone may be able to recover the file for you.

    Marius,

That error I think usually means that your word\document.xml file has been truncated because the entire docx file has been truncated. This can occur for a number of reasons, but these days a common cause is because you are using "fake" USB memory. These memory sticks report to the operating system that they say have 128MB of size but are actually say only 8GB big. When that 8GB limit is reached, old data is thrown away to fit new data, or the new data over the limit is simply thrown out.

You can test if you have one of these bad memory stick or cards by using FAKEFLASHTEST.exe which is explained and can be downloaded and installed for free here: http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/-fake-usb-flash-memory-drives.

In order to salvage the file you have, post it in a public folder on Dropbox or some other publicly available place and let Rohn007, Doug Robbins, Jeeped or me have access to the file.

You can also try my piece of freeware here, which may fix the file. Also a quick way to fix files like yours has become apparent to me and might work. First fix the zip structure with a freeware program like Izarc or Corrupt Extractor for Microsoft Office. The zip repair function is on the Tools menu of Izarc and on the main menu of Corrupt Office 2007 Extractor and simply called "Repair" there. After that, simply try to open the file in Windows WordPad. WordPad is found Word Accessories Folder in the Programs section of the Windows 10 or earlier Start Menus. If the file opens in WordPad, save it under a new name and try to reopen it in Microsoft Word.

Also take a look at these two Microsoft articles regarding finding unsaved, previous version, temporary, automatically backed up, deleted and lost Word files:

Good luck! We are happy to help you repair/salvage the document if you post it publicly where we can access it. Also if you want to send the file to my Email address at ******@s2services.com, I'll do it for free.
