Unspecified Error, word/document.xml, Line:2, Column: 0

Dear document savers,

It appears that due dates for assignments makes Word eat documents.

Like others I have a corrupted .docx document.  I have tried every trick in the book I can find and am now resorting to the next level of knowledgeable help.

The document crashed whilst working on a formula around the 3rd last page from memory (page 12 I believe).  After waiting etc. I closed and reopened the document and found then that it would go crazy when I got to the area I was last working in, and wouldn't scroll or display content properly.  When I tried again to close and open it wouldn't open it.  Nothing so far has worked.

It now gives the message:

"The file Assign 3 Answers.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

"Details"

"Unspecified Error"

"Location: Part: /word/document.xml, line: 2, column: 0"

I have uploaded the file here

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8CyUQXlwkYeUXdmVl9acWZTUEU

I can open in Googledocs but without drawings or equations.  It opens in viewer.zoho.com but still cannot open a saved copy in Word 2010

I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any fixes for me.

Sincerely,

Rowan

The Google Docs copy was a DOC rather than a DOCX, but I downloaded it and had a look. I snipped out the  BH  from the second formula following "for Triangle CBH" on page 19. That will need replacing and close proofreading that area is highly recommended.

There is some strange pagination and I don't know exactly why that is nor even if the pagination is intentional.  The actual corruption looked like it was due to many reformatting changes, resulting in empty formatting tags.

I've uploaded a repaired copy of the DOCX to my SkyDrive here for you to download . Be sure to get service packs for Office 2007 or 2010 installed whenever possible before further editing is performed.

I would like to inform you that the problem has been resolved by Mr. Doug Robbins thanks to him.

But Jeeped if you could please post the method to resolve this using the notepad++ a bit more I will appreciate. I would like to do it incase it does occur sometime in the future.

    Thank you.

Thank you very much. Yes the name is updated thesis. but I noticed its was only half of the file that was recovered. It was about 84 pages. The rest of the other pages contains equations and graphs.

    Can the rest be recovered?

    Cheers

    INFINITI,

Hi. I opened your file which first I need to confirm is called "updated thesis.docx." I work on so many corrupt DOCX files, I get confused if I downloading a new file from One Drive or if it is a previously stored one.

If "updated thesis.docx" is not the name of your file, please make the file more easily accessible to us by either zipping it and storing it in you Microsoft One Drive or by storing it in a DropBox public folder and sharing with us the URL.

Anyway if  "updated thesis.docx" is the name of your file, then I was able to access it in Microsoft's One Drive. I took that file and opened it in LibreOffice and then saved a copy back to ordinary DOCX format. It then opened fine in Word 2013. This seems to be happening more frequently with corrupt DOCX files. So I recommend for an easy recovery of corrupt DOCX files, try to open them in Libre or WPS Office first and resaving the file.

If you are able to recover the file this way and corruption reoccurs down the line, it may pay to just continue in composing your file in Libre Office or the free version of WPS Office and forget about Word for that document.

Anyway here are the version I made which I recovered with different methods. Note too, some recoveries may be better than others:

    Hello,

I tried opening my docx file after saving but it could not open I attempted to repair all to no avail.

    Please below is the link:

    http://1drv.ms/1MefcyP

I tried using the method you elaborated using notepad++ with winrar but there was only one long line in notepad++ and I can't identify anything from that.

If you could please explain that a little deeper I would appreciate.

    Cheers,

    INFINITI
