Does anyone have the fix to the following:  Activation for Office 2013 Excel, Word etc.

 How do you want to activate your software?

  • I want to activate the software over the internet. (recommended)

Here is the error: Microsoft Excel

Hi David,

In case you haven't already found the solution right click on Excel 2013 (or any other Office 2013 application) and select 'Run as Administrator' then follow the steps to activate online

    The level of incompetence at Microsoft is unbelievable.  Create a product, to run on YOUR OWN other product, but does not work without some sort of user screwery for an absurdly large amount of your user base... awesome.  Its not like I am installing this off a disc that was produced a year ago, this was a digital download direct from them this morning! 

    On the bright side, its a very happy error message, like a breath of fresh air; I imagine a pixie jumping thru a field of flowers while cheerily saying "We're sorry, we are having a picnic lunch right now and can't process your activation!  Please try later!"....ARRGGGGG!!!!  How useless?  What about giving you SOME indication that might lead you in the correct direction to find a fix.

    Anyways, sorry for the rant. I have 3 brand new Latitude machines from Dell for a customer, Office downloaded and installed just today.  All 3 of them would not activate.  'Run as admin' fixed the issue on 2, but not the third.   For those of you who may still be stuck, you can try this - thanks to http://grok.lsu.edu for this tip:

    Open command prompt as admin.  cd to Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15.   type cscript ospp.vbs /act

    ...then do a little dance, cross your fingers, and pray it works.  This is why I have run Linux or OSX on all my machines for nearly 10 years.

    Hi.. not sure if this will help, but I had the same issue on a brand new out-of-the-box machine from Dell. Inspiron 5521 /  Win 7 Pro

    Installed Office 2013 as usual but was getting same activation error.  I uninstalled & re-installed, but would not activate.  Finally, I used MS "Fix It" and that cleaned something out (sorry, wish I could be more specific, but it ran quickly, opened a DOS window, went through it's business and at the end of it, I re-installed Office for the third time, and the activation worked fine.

    So, if you can, try uninstalling it again.. and then run "Fix It" to see if it will clean up whatever it needs to.  I hate the fact that I can't be more specific here by being able to tell you exactly what Fix It did, but at least it was able to allow me a new clean(er) install of Office and get it to activate.

    My suspicion is that there was something set or installed on the original image that was causing it to error, as the initial installation of Office with the computer right out of the box wouldn't activate.

    Here is a link to the "Fix It" page.. read, see if any of it applies.. then if you want to run the "fix it" app (which is what I ultimately did), you can find the button for it near the end of the page.

    For the record... this worked like a charm!  Thanks for the post.  

    However, it's ridiculous that this is the fix, user's should be able to register their Office product without admin permissions.  Also, all the KB articles don't mention this as an action to take.
