Office 2013 Word Keeps Freezing (Not responding)

Hi,

I have just purchased Office 2013 and have used Word for a couple of minutes, but it repeatedly stops responding in specific scenarios.

It is far too buggy for me to migrate from my previous version of Office.

Situations in which it freezes:

  • Opening the options menu
  • On start up (when it claims that it is not the default program) - I fixed this one by making it the default program for everything
  • Closing the word document and choosing not to save
  • Scrolling through a very long document

Excel does not seem to have the same bugs, and I have successfully reached the options page on that program to turn off graphics acceleration.

The main reason I purchased Office 2013 was for Word and I would really like to have it functioning properly.

I am currently very disappointed and annoyed.

Other (possibly) relevant details

Platform: Windows 7

Other

Microsoft Office 2003

Microsoft 2010 Starter (pre-installed on laptop purchase)

Thanks for the help.

Try the following Hotfix that has just been released:

Nope, it's doing it again, and has been not even a day after I posted! Back to the drawing board.

I think I just solved my problem, but I'm not sure exactly what did the trick. So far, Word is sitting pretty with no hangs. I will report back in a couple weeks to report back as to whether or not the solution still works. Here is what I did (in addition to all prior suggestions in this article):

    1. Updated every program on my computer to the latest version.
    2. Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Air were corrupt on my computer, so I uninstalled them and then downloaded/installed the newest version.
    3. Ran Windows Update and found 6 new updates I had missed in prior updates.
      • KB2936068
      • KB2929437
      • KB2928562
      • KB2922229
      • KB2908783
      • KB2800095
    4. Updated my Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics card driver to the Beta 14.3 release.

The driver updated above was released less than a month ago. I think that is what fixed it. Again, I'll check back in a couple weeks. Vote this reply up if it helped solve your problem as well, just out of curiosity.

Of course, if people who had problems searched for an answer before posting their question, there would be no question to answer.

Do you have one of the specific scenarios detailed in KB2849994, which is intended to correct only the problems that are described in that article?

If not, I suggest that you remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into www.office.com/myaccount with your registered email address and click Install Office.

    Mr. Robbins,

I notice that you've been re-posting the running sum of your advice not only in this article, but in several other Microsoft Community articles. If I am the most recent poster, and have declared that I've tried all prior suggestions, that would imply that you don't need to beat a dead horse, as it were. It takes up a great deal of real estate on screen and doesn't add to the knowledge base of the article. Some might consider it "spammy". With that said, thank you for contributing, I'm sure a lot of people are benefiting from your advice.

After following a trail of suggestions, I am currently working on one in which I need to install Microsoft hotfix kb2849994. I posted another article called kb2849994 Will Not Install. Would you care to chime in?
