Cannot play video from YouTube through PowerPoint 2013

Just tried to "insert" a video from YouTube using two methods: by pasting the "old embed code" and through the YouTube app. When I try to play the video I receive the following error, "To play the selected item, you must install a later version of the Adobe Flash Player. To download the Adobe Flash Player, go to the Adobe website."

The thing is, I have the latest version of flash installed (11.6.602.180). I am running Windows 8 (64-bit). Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me?

Hi All,

We have been hard at work to bring back support for YouTube videos to PowerPoint. We are happy to share that we are now bringing back support for inserting and playing back YouTube videos in PowerPoint 2010 and PowerPoint 2013 with the latest updates.

In order to be ready you need to install the following updates listed for your PowerPoint:

Office 2010: KB2837579
Office 2013: KB2837627, KB2817636

Thank you for the response, John. Changing the "version=3" to "version=2" at the two places in the embed code actually does seem to work well enough for what we need, until the next tape and bandage fix comes out.

I'm wondering if there was a hotfix to embed codes inside of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 and 2013 (have not tried 2007 or earlier) to make it more secure against malicious content or something. Still, this solution does work for the time being, and I will continue to monitor this thread in case more permanent fixes become available or anything significant changes.

If you just need to edit the embed code you will probably find that changing to version=2 (in two places ) will work. It's a bit more difficult to fix broken videos without re-inserting.

Our fix doesn't work after the latest updates so we took down the Add In page on PPTAlchemy.

Good news is we now have a new fix and will be releasing a free AddIn in the next few days which can insert from old/ new embed code or the Share URL and fix most already broken videos in situ. It will also automate the old 2007 method which as far as I know always works but cannot support autoplay.

How long it will work is not in our control though.

I tried finding the pptalchemy fix but I just went around in spirals being sent to sites selling cars or other goods but I could not find the software to purchase.

I tried all the fixes I came across including removing the version=3 references in the code but nothing worked.

I downloaded RealPlayer and even purchased the paid-for version, however, although I could download the Youtube video to the hard disk and convert it to MPEG4 format and insert it into Powerpoint and play it there was no audio.

In desperation a web search bought me to YTD Video Downloader. I downloaded the free version and ... it works.

I spent hours trying to solve this problem AND I didn't even want to insert video into Powerpoint. My wife did.

But you know what they say - "Happy wife, happy life".
