scrolling speed excel with filters

Has there been a fix or work-around for the filtered scrolling issue with Office Mac 2011?

I have read all the threads regarding this issue and it seems that there are a lot of things suggested to try, but nothing definitive.    My spreadsheets work perfectly when I run a Windows VM and use the same spreadsheet ... and it also works fine under a version of Open Office, so there is clearly a problem with Excel on the Mac.

Any other ideas are appreciated.  Thanks very much.

One other observation:

I ran the same Excel spreadsheet on Apache OpenOffice 3 (Calc) and I do not see any problems.  What I mean is that scrolling behavior is "normal" and there is no scrolling performance difference between filtered and unfiltered rows.

Adding more RAM may improve things in this case. 4gb is pretty light (never thought I would ever say that!)

Thanks for the reply Jim.  I have not added more RAM but I have checked my activity monitory and I have nearly 2GB free when I experience this problem.  I also see people in this thread with bigger machines and 8GB RAM running into this problem with spreadsheets of similar complexity.  I also run many apps simultaneously and I don't notice any performance degradation, so I believe that I have an adequate amount of RAM.

Also, I open the same spreadsheet on my Windows machine and I see normal scrolling and CPU usage not going above 2%, which is what I would expect.

As I said before, my observation is CPU utilization at nearly 100% for simple scrolling.  Scrolling a basic spreadsheet is a low CPU utilization task (as common sense dictates and as evidenced on my PC), so something must be going horribly wrong during scrolling on Excel for Mac 2011.

MS needs to resolve.

I have a MacBook Air, 4GB running Mountain Lion OS and Excel for Mac 2011 v14.2.3 and am having the same/similar problem reported in this column.  The problem has plagued me for over 1 year now and it is VERY frustrating since I am a long-time Excel user (Windows) and am used to good performance.  As others have stated, scrolling is very basic and poor performance can cripple usability of an otherwise powerful tool.  MS needs to put some attention on this problem and resolve it.

To add something new, I notice that Excel CPU utilization goes to nearly 100% (ie mid to high 90's)  momentarily when scrolling.  I sometimes also see the same CPU utilization (and crippling slow response) when entering formulas, performing multiple cell selection, etc (all basic tasks).  Spreadsheets are not complicated nor are they large.  Problem is apparent when filtering is on and (typically) some columns are hidden (this also seems to make the problem worse.)  Anytime I have copied a problematic spreadsheet onto a Windows PC, the problem is not replicated and I get "normal" performance.
