scrolling speed excel with filters

Scrolling is terribly slow if I have filters active.

I have a 40,000 row sheet, and it scrolls normally when no filters are active.

If i have a filter that excludes most of the items except for 100 or so, the scrolling is unbearable. It's like its scrolling through the hidden rows or something to that effect.

I have updated to the latest office patch and i have a 2010 core i7 MBP with an SSD and 8GB of ram running Lion.

This is basic basic stuff, it's incomprehensible that this would be an issue.

    Seems like it is a known issue with Excel for Mac. (and quite a fundamental one too).

    Lets hope that they are addressing this. It seems silly that a spreadsheet cannot handle data when it has 1,048,576 rows to use. It is like having a word processor that cant process more than 10 pages, or a sports car that has a maximum speed of 50mph....

    Excel on windows is awesome, us mac users get a sub-par product yet again.

    There are various reasons that scrolling is slow on Excel for Mac 2011. Please first try a few troubleshooting steps:

     

    1. Make sure both MacOS and Mac Office are patched with the latest updates.
    2. Run "disk utility" (a system utility) to repair the disk permission
    3. Run "font book"  (a system utility) to resolve duplicated fonts
    4. With all Office applications shut down,

        a. Delete com.microsoft.Excel.plist from ~/Library/Preferences/

        b. Delete ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ (the whole folder)

    1. If step 1~3 doesn’t fix the problem, create a new user account and see whether Excel works on the new user account.

     

    If these steps don't improve the performance, you can end me (xinxin_at_microsoft.com, replacing _at_ with @). I should be able to find the root cause and provide some advice.

    I have been suffering from this problem too for a long while.  This is Office 2011 14.1.4 running on Lion.  I've tried the troubleshooting steps and it has not helped.  To be honest, it is not very difficult to re-produce.  Simply create 500 rows of dummy data and watch Excel slow to a crawl in scrolling when data filters are applied.  When data filters are off, it scrolls OK.  I'll send you my sample file via email.  

    Really hope you can help because as the original poster stated, this is basic stuff and it affects pretty much any spreadsheet where filters are applied.
